What does this mean chaps?

Does it simply mean that i'm close enough to invade, and the relative strengths of our militaries makes me a possible invasion target, so their commanders are "wargaming" this scenario? Or do they really mean to attack?

I've had this message from civilisations i've been very good friends with since we met, whom i've done nothing to offend, have provided help when asked or supported their world congress proposals etc.

On both of these occasions, they ended up attacking someone else a few turns later. I guess they'd built their military up to a peak, making it stronger than mine, and their gold per turn had gone negative, so they had to use it on somebody. They thought about backstabbing us, then decided to go after Ghengis-no-mates instead.

It means the the said leader has begun to think about doing bad things to you.

And that's it. He/she could be planning an military invasion, stealing ur city states, voting against you in world congress etc etc.

I don't usually worry about it, unless several civs warn me. Or if the AI that is plotting is Shaka. Then I prepare myself just in case.

The other times I take it seriously is when I'm told the AI is going to attack a specific city of mine.

As pretty much said, the Leader is working against you. this does not necessarily mean that he`s going to attack you however.

If you get, "We`ve discovered that X civ is marching an army to sneak attack city Y!" then that`s the time to be worried. I had one such warning from Germany that catherine was marching an army on one of my cities and about 5 turns in I could see her army building on my borders and a few turns later she declared war.

If it hadn`t been for the warning i would not have know. I also had a defensive pact with Germany too which helped.

I honestly just think that it means that they have a spy in one of your cities. Every time I get that message, I always kill the spy of that leader within 10 turns or so. So it is usually nothing at all, just desperate civ trying to get techs.

edit: thread fail

on topic: once i was told someone was going to attack one of my cities (can't remember exactly who), i waited and waited and waited but was never DOW'ed

The intrigue from spy are more of a warning rather then concrete established plans from the AI. If the situation don't change, the AI will eventually commit to war. However, if in the period before they decided you are a good target practice, you manage to build and upgrade your military that can hold a defense, or other AI decided (Or you persuaded) to war them, then they won't attack you. The problem is that nobody is sure how long that period. Also, once AI decided to commit to war, any changes to the situation afterward won't influence the AI dedication to eliminate you (However hard they try). So if you get this warning you either start upgrade your units and purchase some, or bribe them to war someone else if you want to avoid war.

P.S. I think agreement to war negotiated in the diplo screen (Shall we declare war on....yeah, 10 turns for me to prepare) represent a commitment to war, so no bribing will prevent them from waring you.

Bribe an AI to declare war to Catherine and her army will never arrive to your border. If you can't, prepare for war.
