Legalities of this.

Push the furniture away and go out and buy a lock?

Well, for one, it's kind of hard for me to move furniture. And second, the apartments rented and we can't put those kinds of things in without permission.

You buy a used computer.
Previous owner didn't wipe the hard drive and you find an old commercial program on it. There is no installation CD.
You copy said program to your main computer and delete it from the old one (when you format the HDD).
You don't bother to reinstall on the formatted computer.

Is this legal?

Probably. My answer is according to US copyright law. (I know you're in Canada, but odds are Canadian copyright law is even less restrictive than the US):

Since you purchased the computer with the software on it, you became the legal owner of that software. As the legal owner, you may make copies provided that copy is essential to using the software, such as here, where you copied it and deleted the original. Here is the relevant US law, bolded the important part:

§ 117. Limitations on exclusive rights: Computer programs

(a) Making of Additional Copy or Adaptation by Owner of Copy. — Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, it is not an infringement for the owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize the making of another copy or adaptation of that computer program provided:

(1) that such a new copy or adaptation is created as an essential step in the utilization of the computer program in conjunction with a machine and that it is used in no other manner
, or

(2) that such new copy or adaptation is for archival purposes only and that all archival copies are destroyed in the event that continued possession of the computer program should cease to be rightful.

And practically speaking, no one is going to care or know. Well maybe they will now that you have written posts about it...:)

edit: technically a true transfer of the software would be for the owner to also give you the original CD and any copies of it, along with the original owner destroying any copies of their own. However since the program is so old, I doubt the old owner either has the originals or even uses the program any more, so this issue is probably moot.

It's probably illegal, but there's a 0% chance of being found out unless you write about it on the internet - oh wait...
