LEGO systems has released a WebBased MacroMedia Shockwave game that uses many basic game skills that younger players will recognize as being a lot like the Civilization games that their Parents and older siblings may play.

The game includes simple skills such as:

  • Orthogonal map movement
  • Exploration to roll back the Fog of War and make contacts
  • Individual unit selection and movement
  • One on One unit combat with health bars and hit points.
  • Specialized bombard attacks
  • Different types of terrain with different movement abilities
  • and other goodies

The game adds an RTS/TBS-esque game choice to the other LEGO kid friendly games that already included and Adventure style game and a very simple first person shooter.

"The Battle for Matanui" has three different Maps/Campaigns/Levels at this point and can easily be played by kids as young as 4 to 6 years of age who want to "be like mom or dad"

Best of all its free and available worldwide through any webbrowser that supports Shockwave

Thanks. This is just what I needed to know.

My eight-year-old son already likes to play CivIII - he plays chieftain level and just ignores some of the finer points of the game like treasury management. Getting him off "the grown-up's computer" where CivIII is installed usually needs the application of a crowbar and a small charge of dynamite. The "kids computer" he shares with his younger brother does not have the grunt for CivIII (and won't until I get around to giving it a motherboard and hard disk transplant). There he has to make do with AoE.

He also adores Lego Bionicles, and enjoys getting onto the Lego website to play the MataNui adventure & exploration game. Once again, this is on "the grown-up's computer", and once again we need the crowbar and the dynamite to get him off again.

So, if ANYONE out there tells him that he can get "CivIII meets Bionicles" on the Internet then I will sign up all civs in a trade embargo and military alliance against you and I will personally ensure that all you base become mine. Be warned.

But do try it out yourself - it is a great web site and Lego have done some great kids stuff in Shockwave.

Cool stuff. :)

Are those 3 little units workers? I used them to attack the enemies and they all got killed pretty quick. :(

But the big unit is almost invincible. :)

Straight from the six year old expert:

"The little guys are villagers but that can do different stuff depending on what tools they have. They can dig in the erf and chase bad guys wif fire or chop people wif their ax.

The big guy is a Toa (pronounced Toe - ah) and is like a undufeetable knight guy. The blue Toa is a girl but all the other Toas are boys.

The face mask thing is a 'Krana' and gives you special powers only once per game.

The Bohrak are bad guys live in swarms and hives like evil bugs.

Whack the Bohrak with your special weapons and then you will not die!!"

-- so there you have it, strategy tips from a knee high warrior who spent his full hour playing the game today and on Sunday. His question at the end was . "Why don't they have one of these games for HeMan?"

Well this has been on Lego's page since February. And before that is was on a CD (released March 2002 see article here BZP story ) There is a really good Bionicle website here BZPower.

The people:

Good:
Toa: Are the big guys with those huge weapons and are the strongest (Lewa is the green one, Tahu is the red one, and Gali is the blue toa)
Turaga: The medium guys with the staffs (Green: Matau, Red: Vakama, Blue: Nokama)
Matoran: The small villigers (they are just misc. Matoran)

Evil:
Bohrok: These guys are sorta buggish, They are Lehvak (Green), Tahnok (Red), Gahlok (blue).

Special Stuff:
Kanohi (not Krana (see below)): These are the masks that you can wear. They give you different powers
Krana: These are evil little booggers, when you defeat a Bohrok you collect it's Krana. These are required to pass the level.

The game is pretty fun, but I wish they'd add on to it and include all 6 toa.

If you have anymore questions about it I should be able to answer them

--KToI--

oh, if you're wondering, Kopaka is another Toa.

And does anyone know how to add a custom avatar?
