When I build the Leonardo's workshop all my obsolete units are upgraded for free. But is it possible to upgrade them without the wonder, paying something?

No. without leo's, the only alternative is to move the obsolete unit into a city, disband it (thus recovering one half of its shields) and build a more modern one.

Yep, the upgrade possibility is not part of this game. It´s just in Civ3.
This is what makes Leonardo so powerful in the game and one of the most important wonders.
It´s really great to suddenly upgrade your 50+ settlers and other units before the industrial era to engineers. Not to forget other nice upgrades, especially naval ones.
