Let's play CIV5 IV - Isabella

Thank you for this. I admit I'm pretty awful at Civ, so your vids are really helping me out. Hopefully we can actually see some more natural wonders soon.

Great stuff!
(Should have had the link to the video on the original post though..!)

I just got all the DLC Civs and Isabella is the most intriguing for me, I love the idea of a sort of overseas colonial empire in the vein of British Empire, so I'm planning to start a game with Isabella after my current game is over.

I have a feeling that Isabella gives a completely different approach to the game when compared to more "standard" civs like Rome, just the way that playing with Hiawatha does for example.

This is something I think they learned, correctly, from Fall from Heaven 2 and the modmods, though the difference isn't as pronounced in Civ 5 as it was in FfH2. Although with the new civs, it's starting to get a bit wilder. The Polynesians and the Incans are both very interesting compared to the standard civs. The patch also enhanced the Aztec's unique ability.

I do agree with the other poster: Isabella is mostly about getting lucky scouting. Randomly giving a player 500 gold isn't a way to have a fair game. The units are pretty lackluster. Should have been a unit and a building, or a real unique naval vessel.

Iunno man you're starting to lose me. Took you quite some time to sell off those lux resources, plopping the city down RIGHT as you get a policy, also I'm told legalism gives the buildings in future cities as stated in many topics. I think oligarchy should be taken much later and when you have enough cities and and units to make it worth it. I probably would have done a scout less even with Isabella seeing as its a pretty small map loaded with other civs. Also no NC start? Sorry if I'm critical I suppose, I've been without civ since the end of Jan so I'm jonesin real bad haha.

True, probably could've sold the resources sooner. But I was not in a hurry for money.
Plopping the city before policy was a mistake, I even said so in the recording.
Legalism... I mentioned at start that I'm not comfortable with the new rules yet. I also wanted to show the stuff I knew - how you can get temples if you have monuments.
I took Oligarchy to show people how it works since this is the first post-patch game. Otherwise I'd go liberty.
Even on a small map an extra scout has a chance of getting lucky.
I'm not a big fan of NC starts. My aim is not to win a T200 spaceship victory but to play a colonization game.

I think that covers it all :)

At least someone will...

Not sure I'll ever go that route unless I'm stuck in the middle of 3 AIs. It's nice, don't get me wrong, but I like other policies more. Are you going to go up honour for the combo? That's what makes it really worth it.

I don't think I'll have enough culture to grab Honor, but I've been thinking and conquest seems to be a valid option for endgame :)

I don't think I have anything against oligarchy, and I know once I get my new laptop I'll play on a massive map with tons of cities for my first go at it and I think the oligarchy/honor combo REALLY shines there.

Coastal cities as well. All of those annoying ships blockading you... Nice to crush them faster!

You will have to deal with the Ottomans who have the great wall. The have good land like you said. I would pursue honor enough to give your units an xp boost. In the meantime have your city with barracks, armory build the army. After that, I would conquer the Ottomans. Take the best cities, burn the rest. I am interested in truly seeing the city culture balance played out. What is the best amount of cities with respect to the new rules governing culture production?

I think in the next patch they probably may have to limit the culture penalty somewhat, for the number of cities. I don't like the idea of having 4 or 5 huge cities. To me civ has always been about expansion and larger empires. I suppose it comes down to playing the culture game or not. Hopefully the next part comes out soon. The game is very interesting thus far.

I hope you show the invasion of the Ottoman empire in the next video. What a place to cut off the viewers, what suspense!

thanks for another video series :goodjob:

I am finding that some days I'd rather just watch you play than fire up a game

Just wish I could figure out why your farms and roads look so detailed compared to mine, especially when I'm running DX11 and max detail

Let's see if part 2 is posted tomorrow.

Hey B, why did you delete the worker near Cornith instead of gifting to Alex for diplo points or walk it over to the CS you found a few turns later?

A worker gives negligible diplomatic points with City-states and I would get none from Alex (it wasn't his worker IIRC).

Great video! As a novice player, I have learned much more from watching it, than having played several games on my own, struggling to find strategies myself. Thanks for providing those and keep the good work! :goodjob:

Waiting for the next part! :)
