Lev Destroyers suck?

Is it just me or do these massive, slow monstrosities just really suck? They don't seem like they do significantly more damage compared to a fully upgraded Ranger or missile rover. My Dreadnoughts were definitely doing more damage than them.

The numbers look nice but in reality I don't think they are worth the cost considering 1) 7 floatstone! and 2) they have to setup to fire.

The only thing they have going for them is they can take a beating and live.

Tanky and the AOE damage is nice. After the discovery of Phasal transporters speed doesn't become a huge issue to me. Putting a Phasal transporter on the coast behind a target (if you can manage of course) is great for Purity and their hover units. Normal land units can't teleport to water.

What I'm really getting at is having a Lev-Destroyer (or Lev-tanks) go in with Devastators and Dragoons is my favorite strategy for capital hunting. Dragoons make short work of ship units as well.

I found the dragoons and lev tanks more useful in my game. They're just too damn slow AND they require resources AND they have to set up before firing. They're not BAD per se, it's just that other options have fewer drawbacks.

It seems to me that the apex units are something to humiliate your opponents with after you've already got the game in hand. I think they're too expensive to be practical units. Two LEV Tanks are surely more a effective use of Floatstone than one LEV Destroyer.

Xeno Titan fills its role excellently. However I agree with you on the LEV Destroyer and ANGEL. ANGEL is functional but expensive, I'd rather build more SABRs and IMO Supremacy's best unit is the Redeemer built for flanking and attacking injured.

I ll agree on Lev Destroyer but not on Angel and Sabr. I find Sabr way to slow to be of any use. It usually barely can cope with moving along my army. So maybe shooting twice in a full war. And Angel is just imo the best ultimate unique unit. it just soaks a lot of damage, ignore terrain penalty, don't get hit back on attacking and deals very good damage.

Having now won a domination with each affinity. My best armies were: CARV + Angels // Alien cavalry + rangers // Pure Battlesuits + lev tanks

I was just thinking the same thing today about LEV Destroyers. I couldn't really figure out how to fit them into my army. All the major roles are filled and whenever I try using them they wind up dead before firing a single shot.

In the lore they are supposed to be floating fortresses, so I thought, why not actually kind of do that? Give them the ability of the citadel from Civ V, where any units on surrounding hexes take some damage. Remove the splash from the ranged attack, up their base str and slow them down to only 1 movement. Now they are the ultimate bulldozer, but still weak against ranged. Use them on the tip of your army to force the enemy back and scatter their forces so the rest of your army can pick them apart.

Well I should qualify by saying I really only like SABR after they are upgraded with no set up. They are still slow but 4 range, ignore terrain makes up the difference and the distance they can shoot makes them easy to protect. When you first get them, yes they are junk.

What about giving Lev Destroyers 'Adjacent friendly units take 20% less damage' or somesuch, to make them a centrepiece of the Purity army?

Isn't there a no set up perk for LEV Destroyers? No set up or extra move are pretty much necessary for the set up units. They are too slow and clunky to be used offensively without it. On top of that ranged infantry still do good damage to cities thus eliminating the need for the set up units. I'd suggest making ranged infantry take a penalty to attacking cities to encourage set up units.

They don't have that.
They have +1 range while not wounded, but this can be quite annoying to use.

The key to moving the SABR is to take advantage of Supremacy's free roads and magrails and also their ability to Phasal Transport to any Firaxite tile. It's better than plunking along one tile at a time.

I was pretty underwhelmed with them also, I much prefer the LEV Tanks. They do pack a punch when it comes to taking down a Capitol but that's about it. I'd usually rather swarm LEV Tanks and Dragoons though.

One movement would be quite horrible. After all, you do have seen what happens to siege worms? They only have one movement.

With the way the combat system works i suspect that 2x50 damage vs 50 strength does more damage than 100 damage vs 50 strength, so that may account for why spamming cheaper units works better...

I was really disappointed by it when I got it. I would say they make for good city defenders but cities die instantly in BE so it doesn't really matter.

wait until you pick up rocktopus. That thing... was so bad.. I never got it into battle on a marathon game - the lines changed too fast for it to keep up. The xeno titan was pretty cool - slow - but can move fast on roads and water.

LEV Destroyer upgrades get a choice between +1 range when not wounded or splash damage.

yeah but thats too late, game is already over at that point

so, yeah, i agree with op, the massive cost in affinity and resources is not worth this crap unit, what makes the artillery type unit worth is only the easiness to shoot, be that lot of movement speed, no cost to setup, or increased range, every artillery owns cities anywya you dont need that much power that hard to use
also to not its dmg on units is crap, if at least would oneshot other units maybe it would be worth it but like this...
