I have a quick question but I couldn't find it by surfing the web.

So, in a game where I'm playing as Australia, Brazil went ahead and captured/wiped out Germany - as it was happening I kept an eye on the cacus belli and saw that I could declare a Liberation war. I mobilized my units and several turns later I checked again under cacus belli and it was gone (I could only declare formal and holy wars) do I have to declare Liberation wars immediately once a city is captured?

Did Germany get totally wiped out? I believe you can only declare Liberation war if your friend/ally is still in the game. It definitely does not have to be immediately after the city is captured.

It could also be that your friendship/alliance expired.

That said, I wouldn't worry about the Casus Belli if you are planning to liberate a city. The act of liberation should be more than enough to counteract any warmongering points you get from the declaration of war, probably even the first couple of cities if you take them before the liberation. Of course, if you already have a lot of warmongering or if you plan to wipe out Brazil entirely, it might not be enough. If it is a surprise war in a late era, it also might not be enough, so I would look into at least a joint war.

I haven't tried Joint Wars before - I have another ally on the opposite side of Brazil but they are pretty small (only two cities) so I'll try that.

My guess is you were friends with Germany, they got wiped out, you considered the Liberation war, but before you could enact it the friendship expired.

So how is the warmongering of a joint war, is it always considered as a formal war or a surprised war? If I had a CB like holy war that can greatly reduce my warmongering, will it be better to declare war first and the ask another AI to help?

It's always a formal war even though there is no warnng.
A holy war will be 50% of formal a joint war is 100% of formal. Joint wars with someone also adjoining them may be better but that's the only situation apart from if joint warring to get +6 longer term with the other party... this may sound like you would never do it but I certainly do.

I see Gorgo attacking poor Cleo and Gorgo is starting to steamroller, most hate her for her warmongering. I first denounce her and then I joint war her with another civ that +6 will really help me eventually convert.... the outcome is Gorgo starts getting rebels everywhere and is begging for peace ( I have lots of happiness) and everyone else has +8 for denouncing and -8 for warmongering.... the denouncing d ecays 1/10.... the warmongering decays 1/2. Th e war costs me nothing really, it takes a long time for war weariness if you are not fighting.

For the OP, I am surprised you could still casus for a few turns, you cannot be allies with a dead person surely... but then the depends on how they wrote it.... I'll h ave to see if I can find an opportunity.

In my game I wanted to declare on Rome, and I had two choice, a joint war with viking or holy war. Because viking was weak and couldn't do much in helping me to fight so just ignore it.The good thing was my relation with Viking could be improved, but a formal war also made Australia angry and he finally declared on me.So I just wonder whether I declare the war with CB will be better

They still have to be alive. Just like the Allied war (forget the actual name), if one of you CS allies is under attack, you can DoW the attacker immediately with no penalty.
(penalties apply if you take their cities of course, but just wiping out their army? Freebie)

In that situation yes it's better to go it alone. If the Vikings were too weak to fight, then the lower warmongering from the Holy War CB would be better.
