Civ 5 is a mixed bag to say the least. There are some obvious improvements, and some blemishes.

Likes:

Single unit per square is a phenomenal improvement, and the fact that it takes time to build units, really makes you think more strategically about movements, placing, attacking... whatever.

City states is another fantastic idea, unfortunately, there is virtually no diplomacy. This has also made the Civs with the city state UA (Greece & Siam) the two strongest civs in the game.

The improved visual world is stunning. The use of hexagons is a big improvement.

Navy & Aviation actually matter.

Unique buildings of the Specialists are great, however, i wouldve liked to see the Great General retain the ability to 'join units', and also have the ability to make a citadel.

The Dislikes:

There is a boring aspect to the game. To many parts were removed or 'dumbed down'. I find that later on in the game, I find myself just clicking 'next turn'.

There really is no diplomacy between the civs, just abunch of chat.

I dont like the purchasing buildings or units. This seems out of place and unrealistic. A solution to this, would be to hurry production at a significant cost of gold. However, make this production occur simultaneously with your normal production.
Say make the side production at a cost of 100 gold and 2 turns per 100 production cost for example.

Unhappiness should be localized to cities, not the nation. There are too many instances where this just cripples the game, and makes it unenjoyable.

Military conquest is not fun. I was really looking forward to going all despotic/fascist. Whenever you conquer a few cities, you country goes to hell with lack of production and unhappiness. This really takes any fun out of military conquest. In many cases you are almost better off Razing a city and creating your own, which is just ridiculous. A solution to this problem is to bring back the jails, reduce unhappiness, and apply a bonus if you have chosen the fascism policy.

I wouldve liked to see more individual unique traits between Civs. A national project would be a really cool idea. Say when/if you civ reaches a certain point, a national project, or maybe ideal becomes available.

Examples:

France - The maginot line (but only after a specific number of military units are built, or perhaps X amount of walls)

America - Empire State Building (gold per turn must exceed X)

Germany - The Autobond (must have X amount of trade routes)

Aztec - Cholula (can be built once X amount of culture is achieved)

Rome - The Roman Collisium (Must build X amount of collisiums, and happiness must exceed X)

Mongolia - Military Pride (once a certain amount of land is controlled, a bonus is applied)

I cant think of one for every civ right now, but you get the idea. Smaller goals have been greatly diminished in Civ 5.

Sorry if this is a bit of a rant, ive played every civ, and this game showed so much potential, and in many ways has fallen way short.
