SMAC is a great game. But the military AI is completely inept especially with regard to needlejets and missiles. I remember conquering the homeland of one of the progenitor races and stumbling upon a naval base with handful of my cruisers. I discovered that it was loaded with conventional missiles, infiltrated datalinks reported that there were 100 or so in total. Not only was that more than enough to wipe out the naval units attacking said base. But it would also enable the AI to wipe out my forces rampaging in their homeland AND empty out all of the cities from my faction that were in range.
Instead my cruisers were able to destroy the missiles one after another, while the AI sat passively. After I had destroyed a dozen or so I quit and that was the last SMAC game I ever played. I can tell similar stories involving AI needlejets.
Additionally the AI just ignores many of the possibilities offered by this incredibly rich game, examples are naval probes, fungal/tectonic payloads and many others. I think Firaxis has since learned that you shouldn't add any "cool new features" to a game if you're not sure you can code the AI to also use those features in a credible way, else using the new features against the AI just feels exploitative.
So I guess my question is: is there is any way to modify AI behavior, like they (i.e. dresden/solver) did with civ4 bts?
