list of all current bugs in AC(X)

I went ahead and took away the Progs starting tech for each Prog and started each Prog. I will confirm that they both had Progenitor Psych and Field Modulation.

Excellent. I am guessing the original coders ran out of slots for the Prog abilities, so they just hardcoded these techs in. I vote "Feature" and not "Bug". What say you?

Bug: a probe ship which resides in a city cannot mindcontrol an adjacent naval unit (i.e. the probe ship has to leave the city first in order to perform the probe function).

Bug or Feature? If you probe a unit which is included in the #UNITS section of the alphax.txt file, this unit is then not automatically added to your build queue the way a normal unit would.
My perspective is that this is a feature (and not a bug), as this then leaves leaway for Creators to design units that benefit the AI, without having to worry about the penalty of said units being probed. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I repeat, we need some kind computer genius who loves this game to come up with a patch which will allow the game to be played out with the bigger resources of modern processors and the later OS. It needs a proper patch. Otherwise, the game cannot continue to be played by devotees like me. I pray that this will eventually be accomplished. In the meantime, I shall have to settle for the Civ IV version. :(

Live long and prosper.

Buster's Uncle,

I did post a crashed game on this site and was told that one of the faction's fighter aircraft in my game had caused it. I was using a large map. I shall scroll through looking for a fix, Scient's first thread seems to suggest that.

Thanks, and live long and prosper.

Incidentally, I am trying the Aldebaran MOD to see if that can by-pass the problem.

Bug: there is no hasty attack penalty for artillery.

Bug: for arty weapons armed with nerve gas you are asked if you would like to arm nerve gas, however there is no bonus nerve gas against regular units.

SMAC is a great game. But the military AI is completely inept especially with regard to needlejets and missiles. I remember conquering the homeland of one of the progenitor races and stumbling upon a naval base with handful of my cruisers. I discovered that it was loaded with conventional missiles, infiltrated datalinks reported that there were 100 or so in total. Not only was that more than enough to wipe out the naval units attacking said base. But it would also enable the AI to wipe out my forces rampaging in their homeland AND empty out all of the cities from my faction that were in range.

Instead my cruisers were able to destroy the missiles one after another, while the AI sat passively. After I had destroyed a dozen or so I quit and that was the last SMAC game I ever played. I can tell similar stories involving AI needlejets.

Additionally the AI just ignores many of the possibilities offered by this incredibly rich game, examples are naval probes, fungal/tectonic payloads and many others. I think Firaxis has since learned that you shouldn't add any "cool new features" to a game if you're not sure you can code the AI to also use those features in a credible way, else using the new features against the AI just feels exploitative.

So I guess my question is: is there is any way to modify AI behavior, like they (i.e. dresden/solver) did with civ4 bts?

I have given up trying to play this game, much as I love it. :(

No one either apparently has this problem or will bother to address it on my behalf. With XP SMAC or SMAC-X will not, at least on a large map, play for me beyond some 300 turns without crashing!!! I can't believe I am the only one not having this problem? I believe this is a systemic problem not just one which needs a tweak.

If one can't find a forum that will support you with a game obviously it is time to give up the game and the forum. :(

Nevertheless, live long and prosper.

My game, using the Aldebaran MOD, crashes early on because of some problem with "terran.exe". Can some one explain please why?

I wish I knew how to help you. Did you ever post a savegame from just before crash? Petek and other help gurus like to have a look at saves to see if they can spot problem there.

vyeh is trying to get an AC Beginners/Help forum at WPC...

Many thanks for replying, Buster's Uncle.

Vyeh kindly suggested another website which might help. Weplayciv forum. I have applied there.

I did send a broken game but was told it was due to an errant unit. No advice was given as to how to patch the game.

I just love the original game but I just can't get it to work in XP. :(

Live long and prosper.

You mean "Weplayciv forum". I shall have to look. I haven't been advised of any response!
