List of technologies and Wonders providing a free tech or great person?

Heya all,

Has there ever been a list compiled of the technologies and wonders which provide either:

1. A free technology,
2. A free great person?

i.e. I believe economics provides a free great merchant.

I am wondering if i can alter my tech paths slightly to maximize these.

edit- i know i could scan the civpedia and do this manually, just wondernig if someone has it done to save some time =p
 
To name a few:

Oracle wonder = free tech

First to discover
Physics = great scientist
Fusion = great engineer
Econ = great merchant
Music = great artist
Liberalism tech = free tech

I can't remember for sure, but that might be it.
 
Oh, and it is possible to get all of these in one game. I've done it on noble. Depends on your strategy and what sort of game you're looking for.
 
99% of the time I discover Music first...that Great Artist that early on is like a successful invasion on the enemy...put him in a well placed city and watch your borders suck up 10 tiles or so and surround a front line enemy city.

One of the best techs in the game for that reason, I feel.
 
Although not a wonder or tech, the first to circumnavigate the world also receives a free tech

They do? I thought all they got was an additional movement point for all of their Naval units.

TCGTRF is correct. Circumnavigation is a simple +1 to movement for naval units.
 
why the hell does liberalism give a free tech??
i don't see any good reason for coding this!
being the first civ to discover liberalism gives a special "intelligence bonus" because liberalism is good for business, happiness, etc. ???

I think that it is referring to the rapid technological pace of the late 18th century that occurred simultaneously or shortly after the start of The Enlightenment, which is what the game is considering Liberalism, rather than the modern definition.

The Internet wonder= free discovery of every tech known to at least 2 rivals.
 
Look at the civics liberalism allows: free religion and free speech. Both of those contributed (and still contribute) heavily to the transfer and emergence of ideas, so it makes total sense that there would be a bonus here. I generally keep a great prophet around specifically to grab liberalism if the tech race is tight.

I really like having to actually circumnavigate the globe to get the movement bonus, although it would be better imo if you actually had to have an explored ring around the entire planet, rather than just getting all the X coordinates explored regardless of the Y coordinates.

my bad. I've never been the first to circumnavigate the world, but I thought it gave you a free tech. I stand corrected (and am glad to know that I'm not missing that much by not being first :) )

No it does not. It unlocks all governmental civics only. I have built the pyramids several times, and I never got a free engineer from it.

Better is to put him in a border city as a specialist. You easily surpass the culture bonus from the one hit.

Of course, if a recently-captured city with heavy resistance and no cultural borders ends up flipping to a neighboring third party, you'll really be reconsidering the value of the Culture Bomb. It's actually quite useful when you need emergency culture for newly captured cities or cities on the verge of defection. But in most cases, except near the end of the game, the total culture generated from a Super Specialist Artist far outweighs what you get from a Culture Bomb. It's just a matter of how soon you need it.

I disagree with that. The usefulness of it (at least for me) is the *instantaneous* effect, which can be used in any number of creative and devious ways (sealing off a peninsula, flipping one or more enemy cities, claiming resources, stealing resources, cutting off enemy armies, etc).

Whether or not I would get more culture in the long run from a SS is irrelevant to me.

Edit: I should add I tend to look at things from a military perspective, and have never gone for a cultural win.
 
If you're going for a cultural victory, you should save most of the artists for a great work at the end. It's only worth joining them if they come early (before 100AD - 500AD, depending on how fast you can finish).
