[GS] Livestreamer Previews Discussion Thread

im a little confused by Potato's maori stream. He keeps building theatre squares on great jungle/hills tiles (even when theres less valuable but suitable tiles elsewhere) because they have higher adjacency bonuses (for example next to colossus/government plaza). He says the adjacency bonus is going to pay off in the long run but if he's getting rid of 2 possible culture from jungles thru marae then is he just talking about doubling adjacency bonuses from policy cards? i can't find any way that that is possibly a good tradeoff.

Old habits die hard?

Yeah, it's just so easy to fall for the "oooh look at the adjacency!" and ignore that in the long run, +1 or +2 means very little, especially if it comes at the expense of a nicer tile.

Now, if you can get the +3 bonus, that's worth it, both for the era score and if you plan to run the late card boosting building yields.

I'm just skimming the videos and don't know the whole story, but did note he is intent to suzerain city states. He just doesn't seem interested in cultural ones (ie. Kumasi) even though he is building allot of TS's. Maybe he doesn't want to blow up the game on emperor?

Yeah I think hes just having fun swimming in so much culture that hes not seeing just how much larger his culture could be

Well that was surprising. I'm excited about seeing French Eleanor at least.
Then again, English Eleanor is also French.

Potato is having an unbelievable game. Maori definitely shot up to #1 on my list.
He is doing well despite not playing well... they are a pretty strong civ. Gutted not to see Toas or how 100 strength walls cope.
One thing I notice in the Maori stream. AI leaves city states alone so far
It is an Emperor island plates map, that always happens

Agreed, to be fair he is playing fast but you can tell he does not know all the mechanics well.
but did note he is intent to suzerain city states
Is he? He is not slotting the double envoy card, he would be suze of many more and have loads more diplomacy points if he had. It seems to be the thing he really wants to get. Also he is only picking up dip points from when a trade is offered, he is not looking for it, nor using dip promised or trying to ally with hungary, little diplomacy at all. It was interesting to see converting a hungarian city ended up with him getting dip points promising to not do it again, another excuse to forward settle more.

Despite all of this is was a good watch until half way through the third one when I realise he is just doing the same things over and over again while not really pushing for any victory. Thats not a bad thing to show lots of things but it just felt repetative. It has clarified the huge faith, easy golden ages, great starting production and difficult district placement. To be fair you do not need placement or even CS's for the amount those Maraes produce from build turn.

Made another update to the Features Thread, keep those golden tool tips coming :)

can't watch anymore today unfortunately.

I like that you can spend diplomatic favor to ask someone to settle near you. Haven't been able to watch further to see if the AI adheres to that. Hopefully they do considering it costed 30 diplomatic favor.

I want to watch Potato's stream and the Maori stream, but that will have to wait until tomorrow (and need to pay some bills too which will take a little while) or the next day.

Okay, yeah. Note to Firaxis: If you're gonna have Eleanor of Aquitaine lead either country, her capital is Chinon(England)/Poitiers(France). Or both Chinon. I thought we had no capital sharing? Oh well, I'm still hyped.
The more that I think about it, Windsor for England would work just as well. Only for the sole reason that Chinon is in France.

At the time, England was part of a conglomeration known today as the Angevin Empire. The kings didn't really spend much time in backward old England. They spent their time on the continent, primarily Chinon, where they could rub elbows with the more elegant monarchs. Like it or not, England just wasn't the powerhouse it became a few centuries later.

IDK if anyone pointed that out but you can get +20 diplo favors from goody huts.

Something I didn't like so far is how they seem to have added tons of new sources of era points but doesn't seem like they did any balance change, which mean it will be even easier to streak golden ages and even more impossible to get a dark age unless you do it on purpose. Even doing it on purpose might get harder now. I honestly don't understand how Firaxis don't see that as a problem. At least for me dark ages barely exist as a mechanic, I only interact with it when the Ai get one. Same for Heroic ages, it's not even a thing.

Note that the press version does not include many balance changes that are coming with the live version. An example is the power buff.

That's not to say that they fixed this particular issue, and it is definitely important to hold them to it as it's an important mechanic.

Sudden thought: Since the icons are different hair... will animated leader Eleanor be DIFFERENT AGES OF ELEANOR?

Seems like an odd choice to me, if true. If they're going to animate two different models, why not two different people? Having the same person - same model, same icon, same leader abilities - with two possible states to lead seemed more interesting to me.

Tooltip that's not in baguette.

Why can't you build solar farms on snow? Snow terrain gets as much sunlight over the course of a full year as anywhere else. Often more, since polar areas aren't typically subject to as much cloud cover as certain more southerly climes.

Maybe snowfall covers the panels too much. :D

I'm guessing the model Will not change much (seems to be wearing the same clothes in both concepts). They will need to adapt the facial expressions and hair (maybe only the hair), and don't know if they Will use slightly different movements ,but probably won't doublé the work.

Frost in the panels/mirrors difracts the light and makes the farm not being efficient (i suppose)… however that is also a problem of building solar farms on desert: cummulated dust reduces efficiency and damages materials. (Some european companies are still delaying covering the Sahara in solar panels because of that).

I'm no expert on solar panels, but including a heating device to avoid frost would seem to be a simple matter and readily powered by the panels themselves.

I suppose heavy snow would require someone/something to remove the snowfall from the panels. I'm not sure how many days production you'd really lose over the course of the year. Any solar farm is going to need a maintenance crew regardless, and you can clear a lot of snow in a day. But maybe that was the dev team's thinking.

I asked Ed on Twitter if I can call him Ed Seashore. Response pending.
He responded by neither saying yes or no, but reminiscing that at one point instead of seaside resorts we almost had beach resorts. I for one would like the change undone, such that we can meme freely.
