LK132 - BTS, monarch, Bablyon

i didn't see any message pericles adopted representation...

Also yah i wanted to try the Great Lighthouse. I also had the feeling it was to late, but the AI in BTS is a bit "slower" so i thought we might have a chance.

Well, let's not waste any more time on things we don't need. We have 3 plains cottages built, which is 18 wasted worker turns. Worker turns are the most important resource at this stage of the game, in fact it is where games at monarch is won or lost. OK, the plains cottage at Akkad may get worked late in the game, but the two at Nippur are useless because the city is very foor-poor. We will probably fine at monarch, but just throwing away 18 worker turns is not great.

I cancel the hindu monastery at Nippur. Since we have 2 hindu cities already, I assume a hindu civ is missionarying us and we don't need a monastery. I'm going to let the lighthouse complete at DK, but it's likely that it's useless at this size of city. I'm not going to bother with the great lighthouse. Look at Boudicca's nearest city:

Yep, that's the AGG/CHA combo for you. Combine that with a crazy personality - it's not a good idea to go wonder hoarding. TGL would take 30 turns.

Some of our cities are at the happy limit but we have plenty of health. I think eventually we will want to befriend the hindu bloc, and conveniently they both have resources to trade for. I trade our spare clams to Surya for sheep, and trade our only pigs to Pericles for fur. The Surya deal is just for the relations.

Research to 100%.

Boudicca converts to Confucianism, hatty's religion.

Babylon finishes a bowman, starts our first (!) chariot. Akkad finishes a settler and starts a barracks. DK finishes lighthouse, starts granary. Temple of Artemis BIDL. Zara sent another hindu missionary to Babylon, thanks.

After a turn of production, I whip the barracks in Akkad. Then next turn I start military, but give no production to it. Instead I work our two FP cottages and hire two scientists. In emergency we can whip the unit.

Oh great ! We were 2 turns too late to iron island, since Boudicca has poached it. Send the galley back to the mainland.

Babylon built a worker after its chariot.

I settled the iron. I was very tempted to settle on the actual iron, but decided for this spot:

At least it is on a river so we can farm it. Some marriage problems for other civs:

Construction came in and I started Currency. I gave construction to Zara for Alphabet to see the trading opportunities to be had. There were no more, because only Pericles has something we want and will trade: Monarchy. He will not trade it for construciton however because presumably he is researching construction himself. Hatty and Zara have some monopoly techs they are unwilling to trade (CoL, metal casting). No one has currency yet, thankfully.

Charlemagne asked us to stop trading with one of the hindu civs, I declined. A random event cost us 20 gold to replace the food in Babylon's granary.

I built a barracks at DK after its granary.

The Save

I believe our plan should be to build an army, then revolt to hinduism and form an alliance with the hindus against hatty and boudicca.

situation with Iron Island.

there was nothing i could do! getting out a settler and a galley from 1 city while not disturbing babylon's military building was hard. (maybe that was our mistake there?)

Yes i think we should revolt to hindu, get a massive army out, and attack boudica.

Yeah I wasn't blaming you for not settling iron island before boudicca, it's just one of those things. Probably we should have settled it before Nippur. But anyway we will have iron in 3 turns once it is roaded. We should only change religion once we have a respectable army IMO.

Not having much luck atm. Missed pyramids by a few turns, missed iron island by a few turns. Maybe the RNG will favour us in future battles. Maybe.

i'm not to upset about the pyramids thing. we did get over 500 gold from it. it atleast got us something. And because of it, we can go with 100% research for the next while.

Not much civs can do that.

I agree we wasted a lot of worker turns. Nippur is food poor, and will probably never work those cottages.

After 2 turn of research I grab Monarchy from Egypt for Alphabet and $50. We won't be trading much with her in the future, so it shouldn't hurt the WFYABTA limit.
I immediately revolt to HR.

New Updates
Khmer culture is killing Nippur. I built a library, but I don't feel that will be enough. IMHO that city should continue to push culture building for now.

Where do we want to build Moai Statues? I see two viable choices - Nippur for the culture and shields from the water, or Babylon for 2 shields with just a 16 turn investment. Both of these cities could have a dead forest chopped to speed it up.

We now have some warriors out exploring, and we have a decent layout of the Celtic and Egyptian lands. They are now heading toward the other side of the map.

Dur should stay in 100% military mode indefinitely. We now have built some axes, and have our first spear I/P. I am moving them toward the giant Celtic stack.

Borsippa is building the library to offset the Egyptian culture. I don't want to lose control of that critical iron tile.

No pictures, as nothing much has changed except for a little bigger military.

I just realized I didn't comment on our up coming scientist. What direction do we want to take him?

1) Grab a tech?
2) Academy in Babylon or Akkad? While Akkad makes slightly less in commerce, gaining +4 culture would really help with to secure the seafood tile.
3) A golden age? With out current size, I don't know how much we would gain.

Well our capital is not set up for science right now. It lacks a library and cottages. For that reason, I would favour lightbulbing a tech. Trade for code of laws when possible, then lightbulb philosophy.

Once our army is respectable, let's convert to hinduism.

Righto... only played a few turns. Here's how it went:

195 - 325AD

197 - 355AD
Boudi declares on Hatti.

199 - 385AD
Calendar is in, start CoL... GS is asleep in Akkad. I sent out some recon to find:

Pi Ram - 2 archers
Elephantine - 2 archers
Memphis - 1 axe, 1 archer, 1 chariot
Thebes - 2 axe 1 archer, 1 chariot

The stack - 3 gallic, 3 axe, 1 spear, with a reserve of 1 gallic and 1 axe
Gergovia 1 axe, 1 archer
Vienne - 1 gallic, 1 archer

Unfortunately there is no power info for Hatti, and I think I'll put the epsy slider up a little. Do we want to use this opportunity to go on the offencive? We have 2 axe, 2 chariots, 1 spear, 2 cats, and 9 archers with I/P 1 spear, 1 archer, 1 chariot. We might be able grab a city or 2 in there somewhere.

Mid TS save if anyone wants a closer look.

Check out the last save. I have a library due in 1 turn. However, I agree it lacks enough cottages.

Once our army is respectable, let's convert to hinduism.
I suspect that is at least a couple of sets away.

Boudica declared on hatty? anyone feeling like dogpile time? :hammer:

also i think this is a "gold knocking oppurtunity" to grab a few cities and end that culture war for our smaller cities.

Catfight! Who's got the jelly?

Go with your instincts Sweetacshon. Remember the AI is much more capable of defending itself in BtS. You need more troops than before.

It's not likely that that war will end that soon - and it's a surprising one because they are the same religion. We may have time to build up (cough, *whip*) some more troops before we attack, and also that lets us see who is winning the war and declare on the unlucky girl. I would have thought she would attack us instead.

Righto... only played a few turns. Here's how it went:
Well that was quicker then expected. I was hoping to some more input on the scientist and Moai Statues before your turn.

The economy is bleeding at 60% science. What would be our target that is valuable enough to drop the science rate, possibly a lot?

Instincts.. that's dangerous :nuke:

Okay, more explicitly, should there be a "whip around", and which cities would be realistic targets?

It's not likely that that war will end that soon - and it's a surprising one because they are the same religion.
They *were* the same religion...

At this level of happy cap, none of our cities need the Maoi Statues yet.

Akkad should certainly feel the whip. For the others whipping will be less productive, but look at what tiles they are working and whip whenever they are working unimproved ones.

I feel we should wait a while and see what progress is made in the war.

Increase espy to 20% so we can see Hatty's demographics in 2 turns.

200 400AD
Thebes falls to the celts.

202 430AD
Hatty asks us to join her war. Frankly, she her lands look better for us, she is isolated as a confusion, and has a holy city. Sorry, babe, no can do.

Sury wants calendar for free.
Soon after he wants to swap it for poly and 20. Better but still no.
Charlemagne wants us to cancel deals with Khmer. No.

203 445AD
Here comes anther celtic stack. This really forces my hand. If Boudi gets too big, it'll be hard to dislodge her. The next five turns are spent collecting forces and preparing for the attack.
Civ4ScreenShot0020.jpg

208 530AD
Declare on Hatty, I almost demanded poly from her, but that would've blown the philo bulb, right? The advance 4 chariots have a crack at Elephantine's 2 archers and an axe. 2 die, and she has a 1.0 (soon to be CG) archer left. The stack near Memphis moves to the hill behind the city to avoid the river crossing penalty, pillaging as it goes. Frankly I'm not sure it's big enough, but it's on the spot, and maybe we can snake the city from under Boudi's nose.

210 550AD
Elephantine is ours. Science up a bit to get CoL next turn. I forgot to mention, in there somewhere a spy was built, and it is sitting in Memphis.
Civ4ScreenShot0021.jpg

Boudica settled another island city. There's room for a fish/whale one there, but I'm not sure it's worth it.
Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

Sury wants calendar for free.

Why are we getting negative relations with the number ONE in score.
I really wish you had caved on this one.

New Updates
I really hate creative civs being next to me. Despite going up to 8 CPT in Nippur, we are still losing the culture war.

I am not sure why we grabbed Elephantine first. This city is total junk gaining us no resources, and no cottages to help out dying economy now at 40%.
OTOH I like the second target of Memphis coming up. Ivory is always a good thing to have. :)

Lets get some swords built ASAP. They are much better for city assaults.
