LK46, Monarch, 1.21 patch, lazy France variant

Expect my turns in a couple of hours. I will probably build a couple more cities, as every city will contribute at least some gold.

Why was there a tax collector in Orléans btw ?

Despot: I would expect that creating a worker and having it "captured" just to get the workers back would be a bit exploitive (and, I'm guessing the AI wouldn't keep them anyway).

Also, good turns by all so far!

I think the intent is to have only 1 native worker ever. If we capture the workers, that used to be a settler, I think we can just add them to the best city.

It isn't a coincidence that Lee took France, a bit of extra gold to buy slaves and industrious to make them a bit more useful. Raze a few cities and you will have a pretty good work force.

We do have a huge area to work though I don't think I have seen a game with so much good tiles to settle without too much conflict. Spain is on the way out and to be honest it is due to the poor start and the early worker purchase. They just couldn't develop fast enough.

Looking forward to playing tonight or tomorrow after Jack.

Yes, I did pick industrious to help with the limited labor. Hopefully Jack will find where the Spanish workers are hiding.

===================================

:satan: Oh, there was another reason for France. :satan:

Inherited turn: Set the tax collector in Orléans back to work

975 BC (1) Seville has grown to size 2, which should mean we should get at least 1 worker from razing it. We can't go in yet though as our units are mostly wounded.

IT Romans start the Pyramids - let's hope someone else finishes it first or we may have a monster on our hands

950 BC (2) Rheims barracks - temple. Paris spear - settler. This will wipe out the food surplus, but we want to grab those luxes. Lyons reached size 6, will build TGL in 36. 4 turns will be shaved off once I mine over one more grassland.
Our warrior on the NE spots coast on the other side of the water.

925 BC (3) Tours completes temple, starts library as a harbour prebuild. We autoraze Seville, unfortunately the Spanish whipped a spear there. However, it does come with a worker. Orleans starts a temple after the archer, we can use the 2 bg tiles later on.
The Romans have connected their iron.

900 BC (4) I set the workers near Lyon and our just captured one to work completing the road to the former location of Seville. Settling in that vicinity will give a town there 5 improved tiles (with the roads) and a fish.

875 BC (5) Nothing much happens here

850 BC (6) Paris builds settler, starts another. Luxes have to remain at 30% to keep Lyon happy. The English have picked up mysticism.

825 BC (7) The Spanish are mounting an offensive against Tours, which is guarded by a single warrior. I'm now moving our archers up to Toledo to try and distract them.

800 BC (8) Operation Distraction works. Rheims swapped to archer as a barb appears to the E.

775 BC (9) I move 2 archers next to Toledo and enter peace negotiations - the Spanish do not have a worker to offer :( , but they will give us Santiago, The Wheel and all their gold (25 in all). I take it. Besancon founded 3 tiles SW of Lyons. It will grab horses once borders expand. There are 2 more good city sites to the W of Orléans now, one of which has a couple of tiles improved already.

750 BC (10) Paris builds settler, starts another.

Both the former Spanish ruin sites are pretty good city locations; one settler is already on its way, the other one should be due in 4 from Paris. We can use the archers to garrison the place until they get there. Spain had a worker near Santiago - if it makes it back to Toledo alive, we can nab it in 20 turns.

Mapmaking is available for 220 gold - a reasonable investment I think. However, that's up to Hotrod. I checked every turn for worker buys, but sadly, there were none available.

the save

I agree that the settler->worker thing shouldn't be allowed and it would make sense to add them back to the population if it ever did occur.

JM, good turn! BTW, who has MM since I am at work and can't see the save. It would be a good investment so that we can explore and meet the other civs in the game. With the size of our continent I think the other civs must be itching for land. Hopefully they will have some workers on the market. :) Do we still have the monopoly on Lit? Eng monopoly on Mono?

Also the game was set to wet and warm so I'm hoping that the land the other civs are on is full of jungle. If that is the case hopefully they will be full of little slaves :whipped: for the French!

Both England and Rome have MM, England also has mysticism. We still have the monopoly on Lit, and TGL is due in slightly less than 30 turns now.
I think we'll want to meet the other civs quickly as that creates more possiblities for buying workers. The workers must be in the capital to be for sale, and since Rome's capital now looks secure against barbs, I doubt we'll be able to buy any from them anymore. The English capital on the other hand is still accessible to barb incursions, so maybe we can get a few of theirs still.

We must be very careful with worker actions. Check early and often for a possible worker purchase.

Remember 10 turns per round - STRICT 24 hours got it, total 48 to complete.

LK 46

750BC (0): Research is continueing on Math at Min Science. Trade 150 gold to LIzzy for Mysticism. Trade Mysticism and 145 gold to Rome for Maps. Change Rheims to Galley. Buy HBR for 90 gold. Can up research to 50% to get math in 9 with -3gpt. Change Orleans to a library. Won't grow any further without a duct and lux will remain high because of the Lyons so the Temple isn't necessary yet.

730 BC (1): Tours builds spear starts barracks. Move Archer toward Santiago. Kill a barb camp on the wines hill to the north. Barely! Workers move to hook up Chartres and move toward the Spanish lands and our horses. Settler is heading toward the old spanish lands.

710 BC (2): Movement continues. Spot another barb camp to the East. Forced to use a spear out of Paris to kill a barb horsey before it pillages our irrigated game. We can't afford to lose any improvements to barbs. Both England and Rome will pay top dollar for Lit. Not going to trade it yet. But don't want to miss an opportunity.

690 BC (3): Rheims builds galley starts another. Clean up another barb camp. Galley is heading north East along the coast.

670 BC (4): Continue to move archers to Mountains near Spain. Galley is heading NE. Workers mining at Rheims.

650 BC (5): Found Rouen 1 tile south of the old spanish city. No overlap and we get free roads. Start a Temple. Archer finally arrives at Santiago.

630 BC (6): Orleans builds a spear starts another. Paris builds settler starts another. Settler heading SW.

INBT: Babylon completes Oracle.

610 bC (7): Kill Barb Galley. Did nothing last turn at Orleans but it rioted :(. Change the citizens and it is fixed. Rome Got Math and England does too. HMMM.. Not going to trade Lit. But buy Math from Lizzy for 89 gold. Start on Code of Laws, we need those courthouse to at least get the most out of these underdeveloped cities. At 60% due in 21 turns with +6 gpt. Set it to Min Science as the GL is due in 16 turns and we will shut research off at that point.

590 BC (8): Some movement. Nothing of NOte.

570 BC (9): Archer arrives in Paris, send vet spear north to Marseilles. Hurry temple in Avignon. Ask Isabella to remove her units shes says she will.

550 BC (10): Settler continues to go south West it is in Rouen and I think should so 1 tile SW of the old spanish ruins. Avignon builds temple starts library. Ask Isabella to leave again but she is not forced. Spot another barb camp to the north. Both England and Rome lack Lit. Worker was heading north to get some improvements near Marseille and Avignon. Great Library is due in 14 turns. And I kept Orleans on spearman duty 1 every 2 turns.

Preturn, nothing to change. I can't believe that with all this
territory we haven't got a lux yet.

(1)530BC We have a new settler. I'll send it North to the wines.
I'll peel off a settler from Orleans and send it South to the
Gems.

(2)510BC We begin exploring the English countryside.

(3)490BC Orleans builds a settler, switch back to Spear.

(4)470BC Lyons founded near Spanish ruins. No reason other than
to deny space to the Spanish. We'll let the AI go OCC for a while.
The world knows Polytheism and we know Lit. That's the way it stays
for now. No one has a worker for sale.

IT English build the Colossus in York.

(5,6,7)450-410BC not much going on

IT Perhaps bad news, as someone named the "Ottomans" have built
the Pyramids. We know no cascade to the GL is possible here, I
hope that is true on the other landmass.

(8)390BC not much

IT Someone named the "Vikings" finish the Great Wall. Wow, we must
be WAY behind.

(9)370BC I'm thinking the Vikings at least are in the next age
already. Rome and England now know the Code of Laws.

(10)350BC Ok, two settlers heading out. One to a spot where a warrior
is waiting on the hill (North). The other to the spot directly North
of where it is currently standing (our warrior is guarding against
a barb currently). One boat heading around our South, the other
around England. We must find the Vikings as the Great Lib is in
4. My last worker check again was fruitless. Currently trying to
road to our new gem and wine cities.

Sorry it took so long...a few things got in the way. We may want to Oscillate War Charis style for a bit here to get some workers. Rome is not really getting anywhere and we may be able to use them for labor. It appears that we are falling way behind the other landmass so we should think of something soon.

All I am posting half of my turn up because I want your opinion on going to war with Rome or waiting. The advantages would be taking two slaves from the get go, but the disadvantages are that our forces are spread thin over our large realm and we are already at war with Spain because I wanted two slaves for the French.

Here are the first 5 turns....5 more to go.

(0) 350 BC-
Everything looks good, but we could sure use some workers. Doesn't look we are the only lazy civ...I'm thinking Rome and England are pretty lazy, too. :)

IBT
Our warrior takes out a barb without breaking a sweat.

Russians are the largest civ followed by the mighty French, and then the English rounding out the top 3.

(1) 330 BC-
Nothing

(2) 310 BC-
Spot a Spear/Settler pair heading out of Toledo they look like a tasty treat.

Cherborg founded NE of Paris.

(3) 290 BC-
GL due in 1.

IBT-
Spear/Settler pair move onto a mountain. They are being tailed by 3 Archers.

GL has been built in Lyons.

(4) 270 BC/B]-
Cut science to 0%

Poitiers founded near gems.

IBT-
We learn CoL and Poly from GL.

(5) 250 BC-
Sell Lit to England for 184 GP and WM.
Sell Lit to Rome for 92 GP and WM.
Now our map has our whole continent...no sight of land close by will have to move into sea squares to get a closer look.

Declare on Spain to get two slaves.
Lose one archer.
Next archer takes out spear and claims the two slaves.

IBT-
Romans move a Settler pair into our view.

I am mighty tempted to declare on Rome and take two more slaves, but am a little reluctant because our forces are spread thin. We haven't gotten horses or iron hooked up yet. Rome does have iron hooked up, but only to Cumae, but should have it hooked up to Rome in a turn or two. My impulses tell me go for it live dangerously, but my gut tells me we aren't ready for war especially if we'll be doing battle against legions. What do you all of you think?
