LK51 - Emperor - World Map

I did not get a chance to play this last night, it was second in line. However I did get a chance to look at the save and consider some alternatives.

1) We will have to temporarily abandon persuit of the pyramids. Looking at the map and at the time the Aztecs declared war, we are no more than 1 to 2 truns form having 3-6 aztec units somewhere in our territory. The most likely target is the city building the pyramids as it only has one spear defender and one warrior. I would suggest that the shields here be put to a barracks, and war production started.

2) Shuffle the defense down to leave the northern city exposed, but the rest with at least two spear defenders.

3) We are going to have to survive the inital attack and most likely take at least one city to get them to the table.

4) The cities are going to have to produce some archer, everything else will have to wait. A war this easrly on this map really hurts us. The Aztecs have a good UU and it has retreat. We are no where near getting horses and so any counter action is going to be rough.

The one nation we really should have been worrying about was the Iroquois. Now they will have plenty of time and shields to get way ahead of us on the city/production curve while we waste shields fighting off waht is usually a weak civ in the long run.

5) We might be able to get the pyramids, or even the GL if we can stop this war within 20 turns and pumps workers into the city. The city will have to be made to go beyond pop 6 pretty fast. However, all workers will have to be moved from the area for the time being. The Aztec UU has a movement of 2 and we can not afford to lose any workers at this point. Any lose, except to pump up a city would be greatly magnified. They can go and work the land close to where the new city will be while they wait the outcome of the war.

I hope is that we are able to survive the initial rush without losing a city. We were in no way prepared to fight, all of our warriors are mostly of somewhere else and we have weak defenses and no barracks.

does anyone object to this general strategy/assessment or do they wish to add anything important to the mix?

Not caving to the demand hurt us big time.

For future reference: Please cave into any more demands during the BC time frame. Our expansion is killed by this war.

I agree on abandon the pyramids and start barracks. Boston will have to hold off any more workers until the war ends.

The war must end ASAP even if we have to give up a lot of gold to do so.

1750 BC (Pre-turn)
Swap Savannah from Pyramids to barracks due in four, move citizens to forest so we get it in 3. Wake spear in Boston and send it towards Columbus. Wake spear in Columbus and send it towards Savannah. Debate changing walls to a barracks, but two should more than hold us as long as the war is short. I may change it to a spear or archer depending on the needs of the moment. For the time being, walls will work as a placeholder. We have 1 to two turns before I expect the Aztecs so lets see what happens.
(I) The Aztecs move to cut off our scout trapped in their lands, he will probably be toast. The next scout is nailed by a barb.

1725 BC (1)
We have two warriors that may make it back before the end of the war, so they begin the march home. The spears are shifted. The scout in Aztecland is gone. Any move to the south put him next to an archer on a hil so I moved him north only to find a Jag waiting for him. I put him on a hill next to a city.
(I) The scout dies, but a Jag hd to come back to get him. A small victory. I don't think that will kick off their GA.

1700 BC (2)
We do have a scout left in South America, he must have had movemnt left. He will start heading south.
(I) Colombus finishes it walls and starts an archer (reg). Savannah finshes its barracks and starts an archer as well.

1675 BC (3)
The workers move north across a river to work the tile there. That way the Aztecs can't come out of the fog and hit them in one move.
(I) Boston completesour first archer and starts another.

1650 BC (4)
Archer heads south. The Aztecs are late. I wonder if the spear shuffle changed their target. Workers near Columbus move to road forest in use for extra gold.
(I) Two Jags show up on the edge of Savannah. Fortunately they will have to attack the city across the river, unfortunately we will have to counter across the same river.

1625 AD (5)
Archer marches south to intercept. Workers finish road near Savannah and move north out of the Jags range.
(I) Columbus builds an archer and starts another. Anotehr Jag appears and an archer as well.

1600 BC (6)
The two Jags are going after our workers. The workers move into Columbus. The Jags are within range of our only two archers so, we retreat one and kill the other.
(I) The new Jag kills one of our archers. The hurt Jag retreats.

1575 BC (7)
We kill the archer but ours is red-lined. The workers move towards Boston.
(I) The jags go after the workers. Boston builds an archer and starts a spear. A new Jag appears between Columbus and Boston.

1550 BC (8)
The archer in Boston hang back there to see which way the Jags bounce. Well, never mind, the Aztec decide that they will talk now that our workers are out of their range. We get peace for 240g. Boston is changed to a worker, Columbus is changed to a settler and Savannah is changed to the Pyramids.
(I) The Aztecs start the Oracle.

1525 BC
The workers head for Savannah, there aren't enough improved tiles to join in workers yet but there soon will be.
(I) Boston builds a worker and starts a spearman. columbus builds a settler and starts another. Boston's border expands giving us temporary control of the silk.

1500 BC (10)
Send new Boston worker to road silk, we might as well use it while we can. The settler and a spear start out for the spot Lee wanted. For the next settler I would suggest going north-west of Columbus on the lake. Then we can go after some of the furs.

The war with the Aztecs wasn't too bad. They lost a unit and we lost a unit. They got a GA that is while they only have a few cities and are despotic. It only cost us some time and money. Not too big of a deal.

The world such as it is...

The war with the Aztecs wasn't too bad.

Well if we miss the Pyramids by a couple of turns over $24...

===========================

Remember 10 turns per round - STRICT 24 hours got it, total 48 to complete.
I would prefer to NOT purchase workers to make the game more of a challenge.

See it, and will try to play all turns in about 12 hours.

Ps, Is it enough to download the save, or do I need to download a new scenario file as well ?

Downloading the save is all you need to do.

Sorry for kicking of that war, but in my experience they will bang their heads on our spears for a bit, then settle for peace again.

Well consider this - You refused to give $24, and peace cost $240. That was a pretty bad trade.

North America doesn't have a lot of good territory, and we spent our effort on military. This let the Iroquois get more of the rare grasslands in the USA. Most of Canada is worthless tundra only good toward domination count - the standard win for us on the wm.

Executive summary:
Some lucky trading got us to the top of the heap, with parity and almost a monopoly on money.
Landgrab mediocre, and a possible weed build.
Palace is out, but we could hope for Great Library or Lighthouse.

LK-51 1500BC, Main plans are to see if we can press out a pyramid construction, come what may.
Resources, Savanna, 10 tiles, four of which are forests. A new city will free up two more grasslands, so we should be able to get to a decent size before food runs out.
After grass is improved, check if I can chop a forest or two, as I can only work two of the forests.
Boston is a size 2 with a two food surplus, and no Granary. This city will have to provide what military we might need.
Columbus is size 4, and can alternate between 3 and 4 food. Columbus will have to crank workers until Savannah is maximum size. Columbus also has a granary.
Switch a worker in Columbus for faster growth. Have to check back, as Savannah is set on settler. Will have to check if a prime piece of land is in need of a settler, otherwise I will switch to worker.
Notice Lees warning that grasslands are few and far between in America, I will complete the settler hoping for a nice juicy riverspot northwest of o Columbus.
Aztecs and Iros are up wheel and mysticism, The southern countries are not up anything.
Brazil does have a lot of money though. It is not enough for me to bit though. I will see if an opportunity for a 2fer comes along. It ought to.

1475 Movement. Noticed what I had missed, as now I cannot get another MP from Boston to Columbus in time for growth. We will have to deal with a higher lux tax for a turn.

1450 Hah, moved MP in palce anyway, no higher lux needed. HOpefully our next lux will be in place soon, so I wont need to raise lux taxes.
Notice I missed out on an opportunity to get 20 gold from Venezuela for Alphabet. I didn't think the Ais would sell so cheap. :bonk: Now I know that I should sell at once for even lousy bucks, because lousy bucks are better than no bucks.
Ahhh, it is trading time.
172 gold and 11 gpt gets me iron working from Aztecs. ( They will hopefully stay friendly with a few gpt deals )
However, my plan backfires as Iros wont sell Wheel to me for ironworking. :( Not even when I try to throw in 1 gpt and 15 gold. I will sell them iron for money then. Sigh.
Sigh, thats almost 400 gold back on iron working. Sorry people. Hopefully Venezuela will get wheel and/or Mysticism so I can do a trade there instead.

1425 Found Atlanta and set it to Granary. We do have iron just north of Columbus. Iros may poach it though. This is bad, as I would not like to take time out for culture in Columbus right now.
Hoping Boston will expand before Iros can poach.
Move the Boston MP to accompany the Columbus settler due to finish.
Get Mysticism from Iros with our new found income. Pay him 4 gpt and ironworking for that one.
Unfortunately Mysticism wont buy us Wheel from Brazil. WIll have to wait until next city is founded for that one.

IBT Paris completes Colossus. Colombus completes settler is set to worker. Time is drawing short now for Pyramids.

1400BC Road to Silks is complete, and I can nix lux taxes. I do a test with chopping silks forest. Forest is closer to Iro city, but it is inside our border. Think we will get shields from forest.
Our southernmost scout spot a purplish border. We have two tiles left to improve around Savannah, before I merge our workers into the city.

IBT: Brazilians start pyramids

1375 Contact with Brazilians. They are up Writing :o HOwever they are down Masonry/Iron/Mysticism :evil:
The above techs get us writing and 28 gold. ( I didn't try to buy his worker. )
Checking prices now that I have monopoly on Writing.
Can get Wheel and 126 gold from Iros
Can get wheel from Brazil for Mysticism and contact with iros. This look stoo tempting, and I get it.
Get 610 gold from Aztecs for Writing. Must be marekt value.
Set min research on Map making
As Aztecs will only pay 50 gold for contact with argentinians, I take a chance, and try to hold onto that contact for a couple of turns.

Researching 100% with a 17 gpt negative will get us Map making in 38 instead of 40 turns. I do a min research for the rest of my turns. Up to next player and some discussion if we want to go max speed or not.
Columbus at 8 shields is really not a good worker pump. Perhaps if it was allowed to grow size 6, it could get 10 shields.
Pondering setting it to temple, but a worker is needed NOW. Perhaps next leader decide to let Columbus grow.
We do have horses online :)

IBT: Notice I forgot to establish embassies, as Aztecs do so now.
Columbus completes a worker, I will skim another out of it, while still maintaining size 3.

1350 Pop a hut with one of our northern warriors, and I am rewarded with 50 gold. After a lot of internal debating, I switch Columbus to settler.
After even more internal debating I switch Columbus to chariot. Mainly because I have never built one before, and also because I want a mobile MP.
Realize this will be a regular quality troop, hoping I can get it upgraded on barbs.

IBT: Nada

1325 Join a worker to Savannah. Hmm, Aztecs have managed to get contact. That was lucky for me, that I was first. Sell Writing to Iros for their 178 gold while I have the chance.
Establish Embassies:
Argentine: Size 1 building temple. No resources, nor luxes.
Brazil: Salvador is size 6, and they will complete pyramids in 13 turns. We still have 46 or something.... At least it is on our continent, so eventually it will be ours.
Venezuela: Size 2 building wealth. They have horses roaded. Pitiful, they do not even have spears as garrison.
Iros: Sal is size 4, and is 17 turns from Oracle. Lets hope they get it. It is quite a nice wonder when/if tech is slow.
Found Chicago by the lake and river. Set to warrior. Another hut in the farthest north is deserted.

IBT: Boston build spear. I let Boston continue with this as I am in landgrab phase. Have temporarily forgotten about iro campaign, as otherwise I would have built more Chariots.

1300 Tlaxcala the Aztec poached city have somehow managed to build a temple and grown in size.

IBT: Road to iros finished. Will let next player decide on how to deal with them.
Columbus completes Chariot, and is set to settler. Aztecs found a city on teh last wheat in the plains.
We did NOT get the forest chop shields when it was outside city limits, but inside culture border.

1275 Get 25 gold for contact between iros and argentinas. More than I had hoped for.

IBT: Quiet

1250 Ack, forgot to set the 4-3-3 cycle in Columbus. Ack. Waste a food.

Left Savannah on Pyramids. Expect it to be changed to Palace holder for a possible Great Library of even Lighthouse.
Hoping Pyramids in Brazil will close the cascade, as Oracle will also be finished.

Grimjack

Save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads5/LK51_1250BC.sav
[EDIT] Fixed broken link.[EDIT]

1250 BC (pre-turn) -
I rename Atlanta to Atlantic City to make the name fit the real world better.

I swap Chicago to a temple. We are surrounded by 2 religious civs, so we better build some culture soon.
I don't feel the need for a granary Atlantic City, so I swap over to Barracks to have another military source.
Savannah switches to temple because of the bad news from Grimjack and Brazil's progress on the Pyramids. The pre-build would not last 75 turns until we got literature.

1225 BC - We pop a hut, but all we get is a skilled warrior. :(

1175 BC - Venezuela will give us $28 for Iroquois, after haggling up from $20. I don't think we can get much more.

1100 BC - Detroit is formed. The city is under cultural pressure from the Iroquois, so I immediately start a temple. This city gets iron inside our borders. The bad news is this city didn't increase the cost of the palace -

1050 BC -
(I) I saw a barbarian galley - at least 2 civs have map making in Europe.
The Argentineans start the Pyramids. :lol:

1025 BC - Not trading writing to Brazil pays off. I ship them writing, and they give me horseback riding and $40. All of the other civs got horseback riding this turn, so no more possible trades.

Summary:
1) Build Miami with the settler where is stands in Florida.
2) If building the city doesn't increase the palace cost above 25 turns, then arrange Savannah to take more then 25 turns. That should give us a pre-build with almost enough shields to build the Great Lighthouse.
3) The Detroit temple is critical to eliminate any flip risk. This is why the workers are ready to chop the forest.
4) Build something other than a warrior in Boston after the current one completes to use the forest chop.
5) Once the temple is Columbus completes, please go back to settlers. We want to get settlers to Greenland, the Caribbean Islands, etc. Some of the Iroquois cities may get auto-razed, and we may need to replace them.

Our number one goal is to converse cash. We are squeezed out of more city sites worth having. This means WAR with the Iroquois to expand. I want to do a mass warrior to swordsman upgrade. The goal is to take several quality Iroquois cities with emphasis on Grand River, Salamanca and Cattaraugus (FURS!). Build a lot of vet warriors please

@Speaker - If we lose a player, would you want to jump in as a standby?

I got it, spent 12 hours driving yesterday and was too tired to even turn on the PC. Will have it ready soon.

Here it is: Not very eventful, but hopefully no major botches like last time :(

Pre-check:
Complete tech parity on the continent.
Cities look good.

IBT:
Salvador Completes Pyramids, Argentina flips to Oracle.

Turn 1: 975 BC
Miami founded -> Barracks
Palace is still 19 turns. MM away 1 shield puts it at 22, same with 2 and 3 shields at 27.

IBT:
Salamance Completes Oracle

Turn 2: 950 BC
Boston: Warrior -> Spear
Atlantic City: Warrior -> Warrior

Turn 4: 900 BC
Forest cut in Boston, revealing BG.
Forest cut in Detroit, normal grass this time.
Boston: Spear-> Warrior

Turn 5: 875 BC
Columbus: Temple->Settler, MM for growth in 2 for a 3-3-2-2, since it won't complete settler faster anyways.

Turn 6: 850 BC
Boston: Warrior -> Warrior
Atlantic City: Warrior -> Warrior
Grand River expands, taking our silks. Put an entertainer in Savannah since it is the only borderline city.

Turn 7: 825 BC
Aztecs have discovered Map Making, but not traded it around yet. He will part with it for the small sum of WM, 1027g and 9 gpt. We don't take his generous offer.
Reinstate workers in Savannah in case we get it traded to us sooner.
Set tax to 10% to cover unhappiness.
Trade WM to Aztecs for WM+76g
Make an entertainer in Chicago.

Turn 8: 800 BC
Boston: Warrior->Warrior
Atlantic City: Warrior->Warrior
Columbus: Settler->Settler
Charriot pops hut in Canada, giving us maps.
Move settler to Detroit, if we want to settle the areas to the west.
Aztecs still have monopoly on MM.

Turn 9: 775 BC
Our warrior is deafeated attacking a barb camp in the west.
MM Columbus for food.

Turn 10: 750 BC
Chicago: Temple -> Barracks
Boston: Warrior -> Warrior
Atlantic City: Warrior->Warrior
Savannah grown to size 6, employ a scientist and drop research.
MM COlumbus for less production, so it will grow in time for producing a settler.

Notes: The workers outside Chicago could either continue improving it, or go hook up the Iron. We have 9 Warriors outside Boston, with one coming in from Atlantic city. Boston finally hit size 5, and 10 spt. Savannah completes palace in 12, surely they must trade it around in that time?

The settler outside Detroit could either be moved NE under escort, or wait to deploy it. Felt it best to move it into position atleast.

The Aztecs are still the only ones with MM, and nobody else has anything either.

Save is here

I would hold the settler back waiting for a possible opening. If anything, we should pile up settlers in the coastal cities hoping to get to Greenland and the Caribean Islands. Keep pumping the settlers out. :D

I don't know the exact cash count, but we are getting close to the timing to connec the Iron.

Don't bet on the AI selling MM. I would switch to shields longer then when we get MM.

Checking back in here. Thanks for not dropping me! :) I gotta dig into the thread here and see what happened whilst I was gone!
