In spite of better judgement, do sign me up. After spending time testing, would liek to see how it goes in a real game as well :)

===================================

@Grimjack - same map since you tested. However, science rate is back to normal so no 4 turn research for everything. In addition, the resources get scrambled before each start. :D
Keeps the game a bit fresher. However, we know Greenland will have some luxury.

===================================

@At all - OK, it is time to start debating Civs. :D

Previously played:
China (eastern Asia)
Germany (Europe)
(Both before I made any mods to Marla's map.)
Australia (need I say?)
Brazil (south America)
Songhai (western Africa)

Considering previous civs on this map, I'd say go for North America, India or a Mid East civ. India/Mid East should give us enough room to expand, but still allow contact with a few other civs for trading.

I have no real preferenceson civ, but expansionst might be worth it if we start in MidEast.

I was thinking North America for the area not played before.

North America is fine by me. No real Civ preference here.
Question: Wouldn't a start in North America really put us behind in contacts and early trades with the majority of Civs? (Or is that the whole idea to give us a handicap?) ;)

Any of the North American civs are fine by me. We will probably be behind in techs/trade, but will have room to expand. America might be best for us though, since they are Industrious.

The usual start is to be the first one to cross the gap and make contact. We usually move as quickly as things permit for MM and then push the maps. However far we are behind, we will catch up quickly as we should have a large prtion of the map that they don't. Coupled with the extra contacts fro sell and we get near parity.

The Iroquois and Americans start very close to each other. This would call for the early elimination of the other one. The Aztecs stat out in Mexico and have the roughest start of the bunch. The Aztec advantage is that we can blockaid the land path and control contact and trading between North and South (at least until MM).

I have no real preference here. Could be fun playing americans, as I suspect in a map this large you could get to use their UU... Never seen that one used before .

Grimjack

Aztecs have a brutal start unless they are fast to expand and quick with the FP.

Venezuelas are even worse I think. Should we handicap ourselves, either of those would be fine.

Americans are fine by me too.
(Another quick reminder that I'm off on vacation here until the 10'th)
Good luck on the opening moves!

I will be starting this today or tommorrow - the game is going. Packing the car shortly to head back.

@Grimjack - Don't forget I changed the American UU. It is now the USMC - a Marine with an attack of 10 and a defense of 8.

The map resources were randomized again.

4000 BC - We get a hut right next to Boston. I doubt we can get a free settler from this one. Boston is formed, and it pops the hut giving us $25. I start work on our second scout. As typical on the map this early, every tech is 40-turns. I start on Alphabet to get toward map making.

3950 BC - We already have contact with the soon to be dead Iroquois. It favors them, but I give away Masonry to get Burial and $10. We pop another hut, but it is deserted.

3750 BC - For some reason Abe feels the need for an early warrior.

3600 BC - I make first contact with the Aztecs. They have a worker for sale, but I want this game to not be the typical buy all the workers you can game. I pass on the worker. However, I jump on giving away Masonry to acquire warrior code. I wonder why I want an early attack unit. :satan:

3550 BC - Boston is food poor, and the site for Columbus will have grassland cows and will be the main settler source. I start a barracks in Boston, as will want quality military ASAP.

3500 BC - Size 2 Boston already cranks 5 shields a turn. If some of the forest tiles are bonus grassland this will be a kick butt shield city.

3100 BC - We pop a hut, but all we get is a skilled warrior.

3050 BC - The first forest chops revealed our fourth bonus grassland for Boston. :D

2950 BC - The Iroquois MUST suffer an early death - They build Grand River stealing the silks to the north of Boston.

2750 BC - We finally find another hut, just to find it deserted. Expansionist hasn't done much for us so far. :(
We buy Bronze Working from the Aztecs for $95 and pottery. I want some quality defense units available.

2670 BC - Columbus is formed by the cows and incense.

2590 BC - We have having lousy luck from huts. I find another, and simply get $25.

2430 BC - The demands already appear, and I flush $24 down the drain to the Iroquois. The one turn that Columbus didn't have military in it.

2350 BC - We end our streak of bad luck with huts. We get a free settler from a hut near Columbus.

2310 BC - Savannah is formed. I am going to try something different, and start the Pyramids! The only chance we have for the Pyramids on our continent is if WE build them.
We contact Venezuela, and find they have $10 and no techs to offer. We somehow have contact with Brazil, but since the only tech they have is Alphabet no trading can take place. On the other hand, they have $130 that I want to get out of their hands.

Summary:
Early plans - rush toward map making. Early settlers to Greenland to get the luxury that will appear up there - best of all would be an exclusive to us.

Columbus will be the settler factory. It will be an awkward 4-3-3 growth city, and require checking every turn. It will be a pain, but this is our ONLY bonus food source on the map.

Boston is an excellent military factory. It can build spear / spear / worker every 10 turns. The spear could be swapped with a pair of warriors or an archer. We can get a least one new worker every 10 turns.

We must get workers to Savannah to improve the city to have a chance at the Pyramids.

Remember 10 turns per round - STRICT 24 hours got it, total 48 to complete.
I would prefer to NOT purchase workers to make the game more of a challange.

A picture of our beginning lands and the short term development plans.

Yellow dot is the next city - I realize it is NOT on a river. However, putting causes severe overlap with our other cities. This is our #1 priority city. The reason why is that it will lock borders and the yellow circle with bonus grassland will become in reach of Savannah.

The red line is our development path. In order to pull of the Pyramids we need more shields quickly.

Oooo, a Pyramids gambit with 24 AIs... Would be really nice if we managed to pull that one off. Pyramids must be way and above the best wonder one could get on a map this scale.

Should we be aggressive pumping city as well as improving tiles ?

Can we pump enough workers from our other cities to pull this off ?

Grimjack

Actually it is closer to 20 civs, but yes we have a lot on this map.

We have 3 workers all developing toward that city. Washington can build 1 every 10 turns as I noted above. Once that granary is done - after we get yellow dot - we could skim workers from Columbus also.

BTW, any wonder that relieves you of paying for upkeep is big on this map. Such as Smith's, Sun's and Pyramids. Don't play with Lee on this map if you don't plan on getting Smith's.

We have also avoided education long enough to grab the Great Library and get a slew of tech twice now. MM is also important to get contacts between the two major landmass and broker those to parity.

Inherited turn: 2150 BC
Diplo check:
Venezuela: 12g, down Masonry and Alphabet
Aztecs: 25g, Tech parity
Brazil: 130g, Tech parity
Iroquois: 24g, down Alphabet

City tasking looks good

Turn 1: 2110 BC
Workers tasked to complete road to Columbus

IBT 2:
Iroquois start Oracle, Aztecs found a city just west of Savannah

Turn 3: 2030 BC
Pop a hut in the north, get a new warrior scout
Iroquois now have Mysticism (duh)
Aztecs have The Wheel

Turn 4: 1990 BC
Boston: Spear->Spear
Move new spear to police Columbus
Workers complete road on incense

IBT 5:
Brazil start Colossus

Turn 5: 1950 BC
MM Columbus to 4 food 5 shield
Scout spots a barb camp in the NW

Turn 8: 1830 BC
Boston: Spear -> Worker
Complete road to Savannah
MM Columbus to 3 food, so Granary completes the turn before it grows.
Aztecs have Mysticism, and Iroquois have Alphabet

IBT 9:
Aztecs demand 31g. All our cities are well defended, and we can sustain a defensive war, so I call his bluff. He declares war.

Turn 9: 1790 BC
Tlaxcala looks to be in a good spot, maybe we should take it before getting peace.
Move out scour out of Aztec territory
Venezuela now has Masonry

Turn 10:
Columbus: Granary -> Walls, MM Columbus for 7 shield and still growth next turn
Boston: Worker->Archer
Feel free to change this to a settler, but it will not manage to grow to size 6 before completing it, and it might be good to have some defense with the war against the Aztecs.
Complete road to Savannah
Scout in north end up next to barb :(

Save is here

Move out scour out of Aztec territory

Where did this one come from? We had one in South America to locate Argentina, one exploring America and one exploring Canada.

Good luck Meldor -
I think we need this war over quickly. It is to early for a long war. Let's hope one Jag wins to that the Aztec's waste there GA in despotism. I would have caved, but we need to deal the hand given.

The bad news is this will really make it difficult to improve the Pyramids city. You can decide if we need to write off the Pyramids. :(

He was in Florida, sent him to explore the area between us and the Aztecs. SHould be possible to improve the city, just need to defend the workers.

The theory is that they will bang their heads on our spears for a few turns, then settle for peace.
