Lock Full Screen Mode

I hate when my game opens in full screen mode. as much as i like CIV i cant dedicate my computer to CIV only and like o play in window so that i can shove it to the side to address other issues.

if i go into the options i can turn off full screen and it comes up as a window. But every once in a while it decides to go back to full screen on its own. and it requeres me to log in, turn off full screen and log out to fix it. (some time multiple attempts as it does not always take.

its really annoying and i was wondering if any one knew how to make full screen OFF the default

If you go to config settings file and find the full/window mode line there is actually 3 options - on, off, and ask. The "ask" option gives you a prompt before loading civ. I chose this option so I can go into Window mode for HOF Map finder. I don't like running windowed while playing as it reduces performance faster. You probably want the off option which is 0 I think.

You can also force the "ask" window to open when you start up CIV by holding down the shift key. I haven't done that for a long time, since there is also an option in the ask window to make it open every time and I use that. Therefore, I may have specified the wrong key. If shift doesn't work try control or alt.

That I would not know, since I have the CIV cache set to off.

well. i had it set to 'ask' and it worked for about a day but when i started up just now it was in full screen again.

I am not sure why it sneaks back to that default all the time.

try changing it on the vanilla config file too

I changed the config file to make it windowed saved and hit the startup icon...

went straight to full screen.

what the hell is going on here?

Did you change the vanilla version config file as I mentioned? If so, what setting did you use? I believe "0" would be windowed mode. I would just use the "ask" option and select "no" on the prompt. Works every time.

there are no seperate configs for the vanilla civ because i have never started vanilla civ. i only play BTS since i loaded the game and it never created vanilla civ files.

Not 100% sure, but its possible that in the Graphics options the box for "fullscreen" might be ticked, and that might override it - or maybe change the entry in the ini file to 0 to always run it in windowed mode. (when I tried "ask" before, it never asked me lol)
And use this
it is the BOMB - makes the screen look like its in fullscreen, but its operates like its windowed (you can alt-tab easily). Otherwise I couldn't get the screen to look quite as nice as it does in fullscreen.
