Lonely Hearts Club, Chapter LXIV: Ramesses

@vogonpoet

Spoiler :

looks ok, move your northern pig/fish city 1S for an extra grassland and two FPs.

It also looks like you're missing out on 5 grasstiles W of your cap, which is a substatial % of total useful tiles you have.

@vogonpoet
Spoiler :
One thing that I have learned on this board is the spacing of my cities. It looks like you are falling into the same trap that I do by trying to maximize every city. Here are my comments, and others can chime in.

1. I like the fish city north of the capital. This would be one of the later ones that I settle as I feel you need some better worker techs to make it very useful (lumbermill, workshops, etc).

2. I would not settle the pig city at the north center. You can split those two food resources to two cities. I'd settle one 2E1S of the current location. You'd eat up some of the unused tiles and still have access to the fish. Production would hurt, but you'd have the same problem in the pig city.

3. Move city 1 to 1NE. You'd pick up the pig you just vacated in #2. You'd lose one FP, but you free up some space for another city to use the pig to the west.

4. The city in the middle of the isle might be shifted around based on the new layout. I'd move the center south city closer to the capital to free up some more space for step #5.

5. Shifting these around would free up some space for a new city to use the pig vacated in #3.

BEST LEADER EVARZ! (not really, but not very shabby either)
Sign me in for Sunday morning, school's OFF :D

Still at checkpoint 1 :)

Spoiler :
Ok, thanks guys - I have loads more overlap now, and should thus spend more of the game working more tiles, which sounds like a good idea. My only issue now is with Silver Whales Fish, and the one hill tile I can't seem to fit into a BFC, but I guess I can live with that if I can pick up all the resources:

@stevoh:

Spoiler :

Thats almost spooky stevoh - you totally saved me the hassle of uploading a pic, exact same thing happened to me.

My techpath was again at fault methinks, as was my lack of defence once contact came my way, and the fact that I stayed in Confusion whilst I met everyone... I managed to bribe Peter into war with Charlemange, but just retired (possible too soon), having lost two cities, having just arrived at steel, and having only just begun to build some sort of army - way too little, too late. Not sure I will repeat the experience though - maybe after I read some spoilers with some techpaths...

I don't know, maybe I should drop back down to Prince or Noble, but I don't think that would help very much - I was able to win that last Monarch student game by just building cottages, teching to steel, and building cannons. At least at Monarch (in non-isloated starts) I can tell I am teching poorly if I am at tech parity...

That is strange, kinda funney though that it happened to you too:). I don't think you should drop down a level, just learn from your mistakes and you'll be fine. The MS game was different as we were not isolated but isolation games can be difficult because of this. I will retry on the same emperor/normal today and i swear to god im gonna nuke the crap out of every AI for this!:D

Immortal/Normal

1916 UN

Spoiler :

Settled SW. This game was 100% wonderspam + farms (other than 1 cottage city for FP to avoid massive health issues). I actually oracle'd math and got hanging gardens (and chopped math boost forests). SH, Mids, Gwall, Parth, Glib, Sistine, Sankore (denial), Paya, taj, kremlin to name a few.

Ragnar nearly wiped victoria out. He and Peter were friendly-ish and traded a lot unfortunately. I gave them stuff for pleased and asked for favors whenever I felt cooldown would allow it to minimize war chance. Basically everyone hated charlie; ultimately I was the one to kill him although Ragnar/peter each took a shot.

Charlie turned out to be way harder than I expected despite infantry vs cuirassers/muskets at first. His #'s were obscene. Even with machine guns in cities he'd take them back at first. I'd kill a stack of 20, heal, then there'd be another stack of 20. Gradually, however, I made headway and even though he had rifles about halfway in no trouble polishing him off. I kept teching, even getting nukes and continued onto roosevelt.

At that point the game was getting very late. Peter build UN and was closing in on culture. Ragnar got LONDON to legendary too X_X. However, I had ragnar and hannibal high enough to vote for me (until hannibal permanent ally vassal'd to Peter :mad:). Even so, Ragnar was enough in time fortunately. Otherwise, I'd have had to hold Peter's 3rd city in revolt perpetually until I could chain nuke all his cities and raze that one. That would have been a loooong game, so good to finish it with UN...

Hello everyone,
I've been a lurker for a long time and thought I'd maybe start contributing.

Immortal/Normal
Checkpoint I: 1160 BC

Spoiler :
I've decided to settle on the stone in order to ensure the Pyramids, which worked out quite well. I've begun chopping and farming my first cities and - after a very unpleasant back and forth action against barbarians - will now settle the white and pink spot. Pink is going to be my money farm and main city to be while white is going to run some specialists with representation. Red and green will be optional cities I might not found since I believe they're pretty marginal, but we'll see. I'm currently debating wether I'm going to take a shot at AP with the help of some priests.
Well, here's the dotmap:

1d5w8.jpg

Took a shot at Emperor Epic
Spoiler :

Settled 1sw for Levee etc, got all early wonders, even incl ToA, which I almost never gets :p
Teched to Music etc got all the marble, even also SOZ as well as Sistine
Then things went downhill, I tried to squeeze as many cities in as possible :lol:
I learned that ICS is not so easy without Org traits or massive Cottaging. In short, I hampered my research badly, still got Lib though.
However, in the modern era I got behind, when I started teching AL, Vicky just finished Pentagon :eek:
She was very strong in my game, Vassaled Ragnar early, even after he got help from Peter. Only took one war to vassal Raggy, even though he DOWed her :lol:
I got Peter and Hannibal to friendly, however, AP was built be Charley, and of course he made me defy one resolution(stop trading with Peter) Then next time I couldnt afford more anger, so I stopped trading with Vicky, putting me in front of her already annoyed guns :mad:
4 turns after that AP resolution, Charley also dowed me with a healthy stack of Curis, and that was GG from me :P
I will probably try again, this time with no ICS, lesson at least learned :lol:

@Anne Crunk
Spoiler :
Grats on your first post. You had me concerend when I read checkpoint 1 at 1160AD, I guess you meant BC :lol: As for your game dotmap looks good except for why would you have the green city 1 off the coast?

@Archredbeard
Spoiler :
Funny that the opposite should happen with Vic and Ragnar in yours and TMIT's games. Good luck with the retry

Spoiler :
Ah, thanks for pointing this out, I fixed my post. I guess I was pretty tired yesterday. Regarding the green city you're of course right, I should've settled on the hill.

Immortal/Normal
Checkpoint II: 1330 AD
Spoiler :
I decided against beelining optics and went with an experimental approach I've never tried before. I used a lot of priests to grab christianity, taoism and konfuzianism. I built the Parthenon, the Sixtine Chapel, the Apostilic palace and all of the religious wonders. My tech rate with scientists, priests and represantation was surprisingly high, so I took a shot at liberalism - and failed miserably. Oh well.
I founded a total of 9 cities and now aim for a cultural victory. I'll research drama and nationalism and then stop research.
I haven't met any AIs yet, by the way.

edit: around 1850 ad - lost
Spoiler :
Quite a letdown. I needed about ten more rounds for a cultural victory (400 min to 500 max culture/round) and juggled diplomacy pretty fine, but then I met a nice russian lad who didn't like my guts, declared on me and captured one of my cultural cities. Oh well.

@Anne Crunk
Spoiler :
Unfortunate! It seems many people have had a problem AI in this game. Hope to see you in the next LHC game (or a retry of this if you feel like it).

Monarch/Normal. To 150 BC (no overseas contact yet, but I've done more than just explore the island).

Spoiler :

Settled in place. Worker first. Sent the warrior exploring the island. Looks like pretty good land, and the barbs should be manageable as they have limited routes of approach.

Built 'henge for auto UB in every city. Settled the Great Prophet it spawned, which helped finance expansion. Also built the GLH, since I plan to put as many cities on the coasts as possible.

LHR-A0001.jpg

Going for Temple of Artemis in my cap right now. Once that's done I'll probably get a galley to settle that small island to the east and to see if there is anything beyond the mountain to the west ("Mount Pain in the Butt").

Monarch/Normal. Checkpoint 2 (all AIs met)

Spoiler :

It's now 1300 AD. I bee-lined Optics for Caravels and set sail both east and west. Won circumnavigation.

Found all the other Civs (assuming the default 7 Civs). Peter is the largest and most advanced; Vicky is in war with him and getting stomped. Peter is pleased with me. Everyone else except Vicky (annoyed) is cautious, but has opened borders.

Tech situation is good.

LHR-B0001.jpg

I'm bee-lining Lib, having used a GS for most of Education, and seem well in the lead for it. I'll pick Astro, for overseas trade routes, which should boost research nicely!

The plan after that is to build galleons and troops to go stomp someone. Probably Roosevelt, though I want to scout his lands some more first.

Just got the notification in the bullpen thread. It looks interesting, and I *really* need to work on my economy building. Early rushes, check. Crashing and burning after, check. Hummm. I'll probably take Monarch as I've slipped in my playing ability over the last year or so.

So, I'm thinking of settling *on* the stone for the capitol, aim for Stone Henge and the Statues in the capitol. Might go for the pyramids but we need to pump settlers out to I expect. Capitol will obviously have to move at some point.

Checkpoint 1
Spoiler :

So, it's 2360BC, city1 is up, stone henge 4 turns away.
I've plotted out 6 city sites, but I'm only sure of 2 of them. And I can't see a good production site either.
I don't have BW yet, but I'm interested in people's views of the dot-map.

I'll probably put Moai Statues in there. The capitol should ultimately go into #2, which will be cottage-spammed.
checkpoint10000.jpg

I think getting the GLH would work here, and there's lots of seafood, so Sid's Sushi is going to be along term objective.

Actually, I might put the next city at #2. farm a couple of priests, and try to found a religion in at location#2. Then, any more priests can be settled there too.

Played a little more, and I say one thing. The UB & the Republic (from mids) work together very well. Virtual any city with a bit of food can run 2 priests very early on, getting prod, gold and Sci. The GProf that get popped will probably go in the new capitol (#2 on my map) so it becomes a super production city.
Unless I go culture, and religion spam.
Spoiler :
which should be very possible with spare GProfs and the seemingly slow tech pace I've noticed already.

I gave this a shot the other day on emperor, got to 1060AD.
Spoiler :

And then decided to call it a day as all AIs had been met, circumnavigation won and an overwhelming tech advantage.
OCCC_Ram_0037.jpg

Basically got all the early wonders imaginable, most in the capital, the rest (parthenon and Oracle) in the marble city which was settled second (1N of marble ofc). Industrious and both stone and marble available can only mean one thing... Settled nearly all great people in the cap, apart from a priest for a shrine and a GS for an academy and music's artist for a GA. Got 9 there already.
OCCC_Ram_0036.jpg

Got lucky popping silver, but that's rather inconsequential. With Oxford coming soon the tech gap will only get bigger and since I don't feel like intercontinental invasion gave it up right here! :p
