Longer Game Length?

In Civ IV, it was pretty easy to take a saved map, and edit the file to add more turns to the game, without altering the actual game pace. 1500 turns just doesn't do this game justice to me.

My question is, is there any way to change the game length, either with a mod that'll let me use my other mods (namely CivilizationNIGHTS), or through the old Save a map and edit way of Civ IV?

I believe that if you disable Victory by Time in the game setup screen, it will go on forever until someone wins.
Never tried that myself, though, so I don't know for sure.

you can always disable all victory conditions, then nobody can win and you can play the same saved game until you're too old to be able to turn the computer on. I've that that, but only once...it is kind of borring when nobody really tries to win. the AI's seemed way too laid back

Is 1500 turns the longest option available? I've never tried it but the game boasts that "Each era is as long as a standard game" which made me assume it was at least 3000 turns on the longest setting. That's disappointing.

Or are they assuming most people win before time runs out, and using that as a basis for the length of a "standard game"?

They do include an "almost" or a "feels like" in that description, if I'm not mistaken.

Anyway, 1500 turns is pretty long for most players. Personally, I always play on Epic (750 turns limit), though I'm tempted to play on Marathon for my next game.

I always play on Marathon but games rarely go more than 1000 turns if that. The reason I play on Marathon is that units and eras simply last longer.

But after a while, your either dead - usually much earlier than 1000 turns - or you've built up such a lead that its boring.

What it does allow for though, is some pretty long, drawn out wars and campaigns, if you like that sort of action. Not so much of the "oh goody, I have musketmen now! ohhh... is it time to upgrade to infantry already??"

I played my first marathon game last night (I generally play quick) and I have to say it was pretty enjoyable. I put on auto turn ending which helped with the downtime. There's been comments made on other threads about how much easier it is in Marathon and I would have to agree. I played Spain in an archipelago map along with England and France (I cooked the settings a bit - thought it would be fun to have those three naval powers duking it out). England never built more than 3 cities total. France expanded quite a bit, however, but neither of them could even offer me a challenge. I think the game speed just screws the AI up too much. They can't keep up.

I enjoy the pace though so if I just want a relaxing game of Civ that won't be over in under 2 hours...I'll throw it on Marathon :)

To be fair, I think what really screwed the AI there was the Archipelago map, the AI is still bad with all things naval related.

Well, at least on Epic, the AI plays pretty much the same as it plays on Standard. I'll try a Marathon game soon.

I feel Marathon doesn't play that differently from Standard, you need more turns to build units so end effect is about the same, except more turns to explore map.

the More Units mod on Marathon helps a bit to make it a bit more exciting, but I'm also working on a mod that slows down tech to a crawl, making every era of the game something to use actively, not just "hmm nah, 3 more turns and I get better unit anyways"

As silly as it sounds, I've never tried turning off the time victory condition. I have NO idea why that never occurred to me :P

If you ally with CS's though, playing standard after a victory, will not allow you to "purchase" additional ally "turns". In fact, it reached the point where if you paid 1000 gold it decreased your turns by 5.

I understand the concept of decreasing return, but should there not be a "cap" at which it stops decreasing any further?
