Looking for guidance on how to develop tiles

I'm kind of just plunking things down now where they'll give me the best gains - or to reach tiles that are farther away. But I have no idea if when I do that it destroys the natural stuff that was there and changes the yield or adds to it. I'm sure there is some big strategy here and I'm only scratching the surface.
