This isn't grave digging, so much as waking from a long coma. But I missed the whole Leopard thing and have just installed Snow Leopard which leads to my post.
At some point between 10.4.11 and 10.6 Apple fixed the drivers for the GeForce 8600M and I can now turn on anti-aliasing with Civ IV 1.74.
So, for anyone who has been holding off on getting a two year old computer or installing a two year old game because of this bug, wait no longer! Or, if you stopped playing Civ IV a while ago and still have a MacBook Pro with GeForce 8600 - it works better than before.
For other readers this can just serve as an indication that Vanilla Civ IV works nicely on Snow Leopard on a variety of hardware configurations.
