I remember when games used to come with rules books that explained how they work, but I'm old.

I think SMAC was my biggest rule book. Back in them days I had the patience to read all or most of the rule book even before playing the game.

I do believe I read civ 6 rule "book" as well since it released before the game.

I loved those big heavy rule books Of course with games being updated at the rate of knots they are these days, you'd have to have space in the margins to update it every month or so lol.

Sort of like updating the Squad Leader rulebook every month when the new General magazine came out.

I think this is a good place to say that I like how the tiles that a unit has just seen for the first time roll smoothly into view, and any mountains in the distance are revealed last. I especially love how they rise up stretching any map line that crosses them, until they shift from map brown (tan? lol) to their proper colours.

Was it CivII or SMAC (or both) that had the tech poster that came with it? I think I still have that in an old box of stuff somewhere.

I would say both. I probably have both around somewhere. I had to abandon many game boxes when I moved across country after the Navy, but kept the posters and rulebooks around somewhere. Game boxes in those days were huge, and not convenient when moving.

IV was the last game that I got the tech tree poster with it. Of course I only got V through steam, so that was never going to happen lol.
With the changes you get with updates now, any would be inaccurate not long after release of course.
