LotR26 Mounted Mongols

Played 10...started off by doing some micro on our cities, but got bored about half way through. Also looked to switch to Mercantilism, but it was a hefty 3 turns of anarchy . The GL should birth a GS in a few turns, will trigger a golden age and then swap. I did use the whip fairly heavily my turnset, we have an excess of happy and there aren't too many turns left in this one! About four turns in everything is in position, and I buy de Gaulle's map for 5 gold and then declare. We went from 54 to 73 Cuirassier during those four turns...I really, really did use the :whip:. Here is the power graph:

powerii3.jpg

When I declare war a deal for Copper to de Gaulle gets cancelled . I take out Hariharalaya immediately (no revolt necessary):

harijd0.jpg

I lost two 90+% battles doing that, including a shock Cuirassier to an Axe . Final act before ending the turn was to trigger a golden age, although I forgot to revolt to Mercantilism for five turns . In between turns Peter burns about half his troops:

ibtnk7.jpg

That'll be the last screenshot like that you see, but it happened quite a bit. He took a city, but had no where near enough to hold it and it was ours as soon as I could make a few clicks. The rest of Peter's army was holed up in Braga:

bragayh4.jpg

The stack I had in the area wasn't enough to take out those troops, even with a revolt, so the plan was to bring in the stack that took out Lagos to the south:

lagosih0.jpg

Meanwhile, de Gaulle shows up with an uber stack of Pikeman, Maceman and Trebs at Yeha. It would have been nice to have some Knights for flank attacks against the Trebuchet, but in the end I just consolidated as many troops as I could in the city. Final action before ending the turn was to take Tartar, Peter's lone city in the North:

tartarxy2.jpg

In between turns, Yeha holds (given that city's past, I figured she was doomed), although we lost several Cuirassier. A small scouting stack found de Gaulle's stack of doom:

doomaz4.jpg

That's not too shabby...I almost used quotation marks around doom, but there are enough Medieval units in there to be at least a little scary. I noodled it over and figured this stack was headed towards Yeha as well (the orientation means that she was moving NE, I believe). So I kept all the units I had in there and trickled in some more over the next few turns. On the Portugues front, Braga fell two turns later:

takebragaes8.jpg

Peter is mostly gassed. After healing up I think the rest of his cities will fall quickly. I have enough Spies in the area and I believe sufficient EPs to incite revolts (I did modify EPs towards de Gaulle, if you end up short just run 100% espionage slider for a turn). Sure enough, de Gaulle's stack showed up at Yeha, and I pounded it. One turn later, another large stack shows up:

gaulleqc6.jpg

He's out of Maceman it would seem. I toy with the idea of attacking the stack, but decide to wait it out since I can't do any flank attacks. What a good decision that was, IBT a large stack of Pikemen comes in from the NE and attacks . Here's what's left after the carnage:

carnagegp4.jpg

Wow, just two units left . He's still get several units in the area, but two more Cuirassier trickle in, and I rotate some garrison units from neighboring cities and Yeha holds! I'm rather proud I saved those poor souls from more strife :mischief:. Here's were we are at from a Domination standpoint:

dominationhu2.jpg

I've been putting cities towards build Wealth unless they are fairly close the front. We can probably get in some kills with Calvarly while waiting for borders to expand. Enjoy!

Darrell

P.S. I'm pretty sure the large number of Pikeman is a result of Blake's AI enhancements. It does a much better job of matching units built to what it sees coming at it.

Nice turns, darrell. I'm glad you got to enjoy the fun some, too. Peter is in big trouble and we should have seen most of the worst from De Gaulle. Not much more to do now but mop up.

I think Jabah's up, again/still. But I'll let Ky claim if he gets in first. :) Not a whole lot left. Just put the hammer down.

Arathorn

I see it, but not sure that I could play all my turns tonight (volley-ball game between 20h30-22h30), so if Ky wants to play tonight he could.

If Ky couldn't play then I will play for sure tomorrow night.

So I am waiting for Ky to decide before claiming the game :)

lotr26chinookbl1.jpg

Hire a few scientists to bring Rifling next turn at massive but sustainable deficit. (so the queue cuirassiers will be auto-changed to cavalries)

IBT
lose 2 cuirassiers to random attacks

T4 - 1645AD
Rifling ->Chemistry (at 0% - for better workshop and way to biology / but shouldn't be completed anyway)

needed 30 extra EP to be able to revolt Coimbra (only 40% defence but on hill)
try anyway
First cavalry withdraws at 65%
then a cuirassier loses at 30%
then cuirassiers win at 65%, 95%
then Belisarius (cavalry) wins at 99%
lotr26coimbraxb6.jpg

We are at 62% of land domination.

IBT
lotr26apelectionsd8.jpg

De Gaulle is trying for a Diplo Victory (AP election), he should not be allowed that???

T8 - 1665AD
lotr26apvoteshi4.jpg

In fact, he is allowed since he has less than 75% of the vote.
But since we even have 100 votes vs 132 for Degaulle, he can't even pass a simple resolution.

Revolt Bantu (4pike/4lg defending)
Cavalries win at 95%, 95%, 90%,
then cuirassiers win at 80%, 80%, 90%, 99%, 99%

T9 - 1670AD
63% domination.
Move troops further towards DeGaulle South-West (pushing next ex Peter's border)

T10 - 1675AD
63.5% land domination.
DG brings in some cats to be killed outside Coimbra.

Revolt Chicago
Cavalries win at 98% then 99%x9
lotr26chicagotb8.jpg

-> capture (3rd by cavalry)

We are now at 63.99% of the land for domination purpose.
lotr266399gq1.jpg

And both Oporto and Evora will reach 15 culture next turn.

Nice finish, Jabah! :hammer: I especially liked this line:

This sums up nicely our superiority in the end.

Too bad I had to skip my last turn; I missed all the late-game fun. :) Thanks Arathorn for setting up this game, and the team for a fun ride! I learned a lot about rarely used units (cuirassiers), unusual tech paths (unusual for me, that is), nice tactics (luring out city defenders) and the joy of fast-moving aggression. I'm really surprised how easy the game was on Emperor, though.

As one of the lurkers I agree.

I thought this game was going to very painful having no good city defenders, and nothing to counter pikes. I was wrong big time!

I'd like to echo nearly everything Kylearan said. Fun team, fun ride. I learned a lot. And I just might use some fast units again, instead of always doing the siege/infantry route. Well, if I play Civ4 again. It was nice to beeline some different techs, not get to Liberalism first, and still have things work out so nicely. Tactically, strategically, with both military and science, it was enlightening. I'm also a bit surprised at how easy it seemed on Emperor. I was expecting a bit more of a challenge. I think the lack of challenge goes back to the very high caliber of players on this team. Thanks for joining. Twas very fun.

Arathorn

The game was also relatively easy because
- Our longest border was always safe (friendly civ without OB with our ennemy
- the Ais had some/lots of wars between themself, so (almost) none had a (really) big scary stack coming at us. (we did evacuate and empty a few border cities, but the AI were not pressing their advantage further inside)
- They was not that many pikes and we killed most of them one at a time in the open (or in city with no defence) where shock-promoted knights have a good chance of surviving (and of course we never try to assault a city with a pike-heavy defence).

Jabah

Well, someone did suggest we bump the difficulty up to Immortal :mischief:. The only player I wasn't too familiar with was Jabah and he is top notch no doubt. Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this one. Everyone took the time to write strong reports, which always makes for a more enjoyable experience. I can finally check off playing a game with Kylearan, and I can check off playing a game from the LotR series. I can also check off playing my billionth game with Ozbenno .

Darrell

I'd echo the thoughts that playing around with units I don't usually build and tech paths I don't normally follow was fun. The fact that everyone was in much the same boat highlights that this was played great as a team. The speed advantage we got from our troops was telling and meant we could take cities before they were able to be garrisoned.

I have a new found respect for the cuirassiers as a result and will again head towards Military Tradition (which I abandoned after the Rifling requirements for Cavalry) in warring games and now realise that city defence is overrated
