I have been playing for a while, experimenting really, and I have some questions that i was hoping someone could help with.
1) Is it possible to upgrade units to armored units later in the game?
2) What is a typical average tech rate for later stage technologies? I ask this because I was well ahead of the AI for the entire game, until all of a sudden Victoria bolted ahead. How does the AI tech so fast later in the game?

Weclome to the forums! Not sure if your playing Vanilla, warlords, or BTS.

First question is easy, NO.

The second question is really loaded. First Victoria is financial, so if she has alot of cottages and then switched to free speech and free religion, that's a big increase in tech. Also what is the size of here empire compared with your's, The more land you have late in the game the better you tech. Really need mor einfo on the game.

I can answer 1 for you, nothing upgrades to tanks.
the cavalry that arguably should can become gunships instead
hope someone can help explain 2 to you

Futurehermit created a thread with the average tech cost by age. This will give you a good idea how many beakers you should have to maintain a tech per X turns in a given period.

Going to war slows down your tech pace. War weariness, spending gold on upgrades, maintenance costs of newly conquered cities.. all cut into your commerce. If you spend the mid game warring, you'll find yourself behind the 8 ball if you spend too much time warring and not enough time keeping research up.

The same holds true of the AI. If they are given a long period of peace, they are more likely to tech up... especially in the late game as they try to square off for a space race victory.

I've seen some AI tech surges that I'm pretty sure happened when an isolated civ started trading techs.
