Low scores for cultural victories?

I've just played to my second cultural victory, and this time I think I did just about everything right. Built all but one or two of the wonders, got the three legendary cities by 1805, all my little people were fat and happy.

Still, I got a fairly low score - I think I was Henry the VIII. My super high scores come from when I play some warlike civ and get a domination victory.

Should I just be resigned to getting a lower score when getting a cultural victory?

Yes, and that is why
1. cultural (and other) victories should and are being compared by date of completion.
2. there is a separate competition for score in the HOF, because not even standard methods of military domination can create a score this high on Chieftain level

1) score isn't that important
2) culture win in 1805 is good. Not brilliant but still good.

If you want a higher score (cultural or not), you need either to be faster (hard, but doable, there are some writeups for normal speed cultural victories around 1500 or 1600 AD) or to be bigger (aka as milking).
To be bigger you need to have more land and cities, and use biology.

I was on marathon, but I don't expect that should have made a difference in what year I should have been done.

I decided to hold out for the techs for the entertainment wonders (Broadway, Rock and Roll, Hollywood, Eiffel Tower) before switching the slider from science to culture. I guess I should have tried it earlier, after I had all the religions ready.

It shouldn't but it does.
Read the HoF. cultural victories on quick can be achieved in the 12th century.

It's no use for the cultural victory but it's more fun and easier.
If you want to compete in th HoF, you need to play very specific games.
If you want to play for fun, you shouldn't look at the score at all.

Eiffel tower gives you broadcast towers everywhere, which allow you to put two more artist specialists in your city even if you're not running caste system (which I'm usually not). The others increase culture in the city they're built by 50%.

you don't need that many artists if you use the slider. With theater, globe theater and national epic you can have a good bunch of artists already!

I would expect to in most cases. I don't doubt that somebody will correct me, but the scoring function begins from a baseline of your game score which in turn is based on wonders, tech, population, and land.
My expectation is that most cultural victories are going to rate pretty low on the last three of those.

So the only thing you can do is try to be faster.
