Virtual Programming's website now has Europa Universalis 2 (EU2) listed as "In Late Development." Soon, very soon, we'll have an opportunity to install this classic RTS game. A co-worker of mine loves it, absolutely loves it. My apologies to the powers-that-be if this is deemed too far off-topic.

EUII is on my short list of must-have games. I hate to say it, but most of the serious strategy gamers I know prefer it to Civ III. I sure hope it's a good port!

I don't know. I've never played a RTS before. From my understanding, in RTS there is more of a rush, because of less reaction time when, for example, your lands are invaded. However, there is not as much in-depth play as a TBS. Now, I don't know. This is just the gist of what I've heard.

Looks interesting... kinda like Civ meets Risk.

I remember my last RTS game: Pax Imperia. Man, for the time, *that* was cool (if it wasn't crashing on me). I'd pause it anyway because you never had micro-management time, needed it, and the AI was, of course, turn-perfect. But it was still fun. Myth was RTS of a sort, but no empire building.

I still mourn how Blizzard pooched Pax with the sequel. May it rest in peace.

Civ III: PtW Using DirectPlay, Mac Status
6:00 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

An edited transcript has been posted at Civilization Fanatics' Center of a recent chat with developer Firaxis about their upcoming title Civilization III: Play the World. Some of the questions posed to the Firaxis employees include the possibility of a Mac version of the multiplayer add-on, and while they note the original Mac version "did well," the game makes use of Microsoft's proprietary networking protocol DirectPlay.

Mac users familiar with other DirectPlay games know that titles which use it are virtually impossible to make cross-platform for multiplayer purposes. Jeff Morris of Firaxis notes that the decision about the Mac version is "up to the publisher," and it's still entirely possible MacSoft will decide to bring it to the platform. When pressed Morris notes:

We did well with Civ3. MP [MultiPlayer] presents an issue since we used DirectX.

While the news about Mac-to-PC compatibility may be disheartening, we'll bring you any new information available about seeing Play the World on the Mac.

I really liked Pax. I met the developers after their first try and provided them with an extensive list of bugs and suggestions which they used later on. Unfortunately, the game never actually worked right. As far as EUII goes, I understand that the RTS aspects don't really get in the way of the strategy and I have seen a lot of comparisons to Civ III on various boards.
