Please post any mac scenarios or gotm's you have - I can't find them anywhere! I'm pretty new to Civ and would like to start getting into scenarios and GOTM - it seems I have problems downloading stuff too - any advice or help available?

thanks...

Welcome to CFC! Try blueboxe's GOTM scenario you just have to use AlanH's installers and then download the other GOTMs/And then download blueboxes scenario.Only if you have 1.29b2 of course. And then any scenario that PC user designed for the original Civ3 will work with the Mac.Same goes for Modpacks.

I have the 1.29 - but everytime I download a scenario it says I don't have the plug in - or some other type problem - i don't have the application or something to that effect...very frustrating. I don't know what to download to enable viewing - any sugg.'s?

Sorry about that might ask AlanH.I am playing Civ3 right as i speak!

Hi, welcome to Mac CFC :wavey: I'd like to help ...

Which scenarios are you trying to load, and what precise error messages do you get?

I think I know what you're talking about!

First of all, unlike in Civ 2, there are not specifically "Mac scenarios" and "PC scenarios;" Civ 3 scenarios are platform-independent. Unfortunately, since there is not a Mac version of Conquests, you can't simply convert a few files with Resedit and Photoshop or a script and then run any scenario ever made for the game in your copy of Civ 2 Gold, now you can only run those that support Vanilla Civ 3. Trouble is, almost all of the good scenarios out there require PTW or C3C, as scenario authors generally don't like writing mods for Vanilla-and who can blame them? The expansion packs offer all sorts of cool toys for modders to play with (not as cool as events files, though) that Vanilla just doesn't have (like the abilities to pre-place cities and units, for example  ).

BUT I don't think that's what your problem is. I'll bet that your problem is that Internet Explorer keeps throwing this message box in your face whenever you try to download scenarios:

unhandled.jpg

Assuming that's the case, the solution is simple: select the button that says "Save file as" and simply save the file (renaming it if you must) to the desktop. You'll then be able to either decompress it with Aladdin System's basic Unstuff or whatever it's called, or, if it's already uncompressed, put it in your "Scenarios" or "Maps" folder in your Civ 3 folder and run it from inside Civ 3.

If that isn't your problem, sorry for wasting your time and, um, good luck.

Well caught, nmcul. You're probably right.

When you are downloading something the browser doesn't recognise, just Control-click the link and tell the browser to download it to disk, or save it to disk. The menu option varies, depending on the browser.

Thanks for the help - I have just gotten an upgrade to OSx, so I reloaded the beta patch and will follow your instr. re: "Save File As"..
What does PTW allow you to do?

PtW isn't available for the Mac, but it has extra civs and associated unique units, and there are some changes to the way it plays, plus a few extra techs, city and terrain improvements like radar towers, commercial docks ... , and one new wonder (the Internet).

The GOTM mods, deployed for GOTM competition games, provide a lot of equivalent functionality for us Mac players who can't get PtW. Bluebox's scenario now makes these mods available for random games.

where do I get the Bluebox scenario - i think I found it a few days ago and tried to download it, but in any case - I just tried using your GOTM23 installer - and I couldn't get it to install correctly - I posted a reply on the thread about it and saw that you have been working on it also - any new info for me to get it up and running on my osx? thanks again...

The Bluebox scenario is here. It's also linked from a thread on the first page of the GOTM forum.

I've replied to your post re. your GOTM23 installer problems in the installer thread. I'm not working on the installers at all at the moment ... am I supposed to be ???

you are supposed to be constantly working to improve this game!! Don't you know that??? (just kidding...) I will check out the other thread - thanks for your help.

i can't get the bluebox scenario to work. it seemed to install fine, but when i tried to launch it it complained that i was missing an entry in PediaIcons.txt for the stock exchange. i tried using alan's GOTM installers for the GOTM files? can anyone help? i'd really love to have the extra civs.

The Stock Exchange is included in the pediaicons.txt files in both the GOTM24 and GOTM 25 incremental installers. It is a special for GOTM, so if you haven't run all the installers and you only have the standard file you may be missing it. What's the precise error message you get? Screenshot of the message box?

i ran all 3 of your GOTM installers.

can't do a screenshot as the error box is in game and i don't know how to get a shot of it, but the message is:

Load Error
Error Reading File
Missing Entry "text\PediaIcons.txt" ICON_BLDG_Stock_Exchange

the game than quits with a standard 'cannot continue' error.

Please can you post a copy of the pediaicons.txt file in your Civilization III/Text/ folder? You need to click "Go Advanced" below the Quick Reply message window here then click Manage Attachments, select the file and upload it.

FYI: Command-Shift-3 will produce a screenshot file on your desktop. This works in Civ3 as it does in other Mac applications, but it's not necessary now. There are other keyboard tricks to create screenshots on the clipboard and to capture parts of the screen, but they don't work properly in Civ3 in my experience. Once you have a pictureNN.pdf file on your desktop you can crop it in Preview and export it as a .jpg file and attach it to a post here.

Wow! You say the scenario fails on launch? I wonder why this has never shown up before :hmm:

Fact is there *is*an entry in the file for the Stock Exhange, but it's wrong! The entry is ..

#ICON_Stock Exchange

... but I believe it should be ...

#ICON_BLDG_Stock Exchange

So I've edited my current pediaicons.txt file and it's attached. Please try it out and let me know if it fixes the problem. If so I'll investigate further, and then decide whether I need to rebuild the relevant installers.

Bluebox's scenario comes with a pediaicons.txt file, doesn't it? Is that the one you're using? Or is it the one from the installers?

i'll try this one and get right back to you, but i installed the bluebox scenario first via your mod installer and then insalled the GOTM files. i should also be more specific - civ doesn't fail on launch, but after i try and open the gotm.bic file.
