Mac+Steam Question

Heya folks, I have a possibly dumb question, but here it goes...

I run Civ 5 on a Mac (OS X Version 10.7.5) through Steam, and I'm wondering, how do I access game files in order to "mod" city names? I know something of the sort can be done on PC's, but how does it work on a Mac?

Thanks in advance.

Hi welcome :wavey:

The Mac version has the same files as the Windows version, but they are embedded in the application package.

The application package is at ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization V/Civilization V.app.

The ~/Library folder is hidden in Lion and Mountain Lion, so paste the above path into the Finder's menu option Go->Go to folder ...

Right click this file and select Show package contents

Navigate within the package to the file you need to edit. City names for an English language installation are defined in:

~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization V/Civilization V.app/Contents/Home/assets/Gameplay/XML/NewText/en_US/CIV5GameText_Cities.xml

To edit this file, you need to be logged in as an administrative user. First make a backup copy. Then use a text editor that facilitates editing protected files by offering you the option to authenticate as administrator. I use BBEdit. I expect its free sibling TextWrangler will also do the job.
