Came across the following article in the NY Times, which is pretty interesting...

Based on the latest research (on Spanish records and forgotten Machu Picchu excavated relics in a Yale basement), apparently Machu Picchu wasn't any final Incan bastion, or Incan lost city.

It was a private estate of the Incan emperor, or what the head of state was known as. Sort of like a Incan version of Camp David, on a more grandiose scale. A private retreat for the emperor and important nobles and visitors.

I doubt if I can find a copy in Singapore... I'll have to check out the libraries, or is there an online version?
