I tried an early warrior rush in BTS at Noble level. Moved 4 warriors to an AI city with 2 warriors and attacked the next turn. My first warrior died but inflicted 1.2 health damage, an ok start. My second warrior did no damage before perishing. But what the F? Suddenly there are 3 AI warriors in the city. How can this be? Is the game not as "turn-based" as I thought? Is this another unsuspected AI bonus--the ability to materialize units in the middle of a battle? I have been playing Civ on and off for years but have never seen this before.

1. did 3 AI warriors appear in the same turn?
2. Are you sure they weren't near by and you just didn't see them in the fog.
3. Is the AI running slavery?

I would assume that either the AI whipped (slavery) another warrior or it finished producing one. Reload the game a turn before and check again.

The third warrior appeared during my turn, after the attack of my second warrior. There may have been a warrior in the fog on the other side of the city when I started my turn. I believe the AI was on slavery.

The question is--can the AI do things like move units DURING my turn?

if save the game before you attack try reloading it and look in WB.

Could it be a graphics issue? Are you playing with single graphic units or multi-graphic units? Or is it a graphics problem like when a worker appears to run across the water or something.

I have a single graphics card but it's not a graphics issue. The warrior is listed in the units info stack on the left side of the screen. Unfortunately, I didn't save the game and have now erased it so I can't reload and test anything.

I saw a group of marines take off running once, across the ocean even. It was amusing, but the game was completely trashed at that point.

If you've erased the game there's not much we can do about it now except say your eyes did not serve you well. Please, in the future if you notice something lilke this and want to ask about it on the forums, keep the save.

PieceOfMind--I'll take your advice and will also save much more frequently. I take it from your gentle suggestion that you think I probably erred in my observations. This suggests that you have never experienced enemy units appearing during your turn. Is this true? I'm just trying to figure out if there is more to AI mechanics than I currently know about.

In this case, I guarantee you that there were only two AI warriors when I began my attack and three half-way through it, or I've gone delusional. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Bloodtoe, enemy units cannot be created nor be moved during your turn. The only exceptions might be due to random events (the partisan event, for example).

I'm saying that somewhere in your turn you must have ended the turn. I think the default option in the game is that when you move the last unit the turn ends automatically. I disabled this by enabling the game option "Wait at end of turn" (I think that's what it's called).

And to answer your question, enemy units have not appeared during my turn in any games I've played.

I've seen this before myself or think I have: it's hard to say. When it happens I usually think I miscounted (even though there were only 3 units, so it seems unlikely I'd miscount), but I shrug my shoulders. Most often though, it seems that I counted the 3 units, ended the turn, then attacked, and their extra unit was newly produced or moved in without my seeing it. But I don't think they moved during my assault. Ahhh, I've got to stop playing, watching TV, flippin' through a magazine, and talking on the cellphone.

There is a mod that causes this to happen on purpose...might you be using a mod? It 'rouses' the civilians to create a unit, no promotions. With this mod I've had two or three 'extra' troops pop in a city during seige. Think It is in Rise of Mankind..

or the AI can get Great General during your turn. Not so good for defense but it is an AI unit.

The Influence Driven War (at least i think its that one) modcomp allows "militia" to spawn if all defenders are killed in a city. The spawn costs 1 pop point. This militia starts with little health and no promos. This is likely what happened because the AI can't just spawn units or move them during your turn. Also the AI may have finished building one warrior or just whipped it if running slavery. It also might have moved one from the fog nearby.

My game I was playing, I thought that Sury spawned a chariot in his city as I was attacking it. I thought before attacking that he only had 2 archers, but after my first axe lost, he now had 2 archers and a chariot.

I doubt they actually spawned. Probably either the game interface just lying to me, or my eyes lying to me. It was definitely just built (since it had the glow around it), so it was probably just that the interface didn't refresh its list of units right at the start of my turn.
