Main Menu Gone

Everytime i start my game everything works fine untill the main menu there the text for the buttons has disappeared. Here are two screen shots. If you notice in the first there is no text but the moving aarrows are still there and in the second one the continents option is picked but there is no planet model.

before you ask i meet all system requirments and then some. I did recently install the newest patch. The only real strange update i did was install the new DirectX SDK.

Try the panacea: uninstall civ, manually erase all leftover civ directories, reinstall, repatch.

If not cured, consider uninstalling the thing(s) you've installed recently. Or download DirectX 9.0c and reinstall that.
