Maintenance question

I have just started a Standard size map, Marathon speed on Pangaea. This is usually with 6 enemies but I wanted to test my belligerant skills with Napoleon on Noble difficulty by adding two extra enemies. 8 enemies in total.

We are now in 560BC and a the city of Edo, previously owned by Tokugawa, has just revolted and wants to join mine. The laying of the city is quite advantageous, however this puts my maintenance at a -6 with 100% research. I am sincerely doubting if I should sacrifice research this early to support another village. Taking this village would make it my fourth.

Any advice or propositions would be great. If I forgot to post any information that you deem necessary to know, please let me know.

First, and again, you really should be spending more time in Strategy & Tips forum where this post is better suited.

As to the question, considering that you should probably have more like 6 cities by now, adding a fourth is not a problem.

I'm assuming by "maintenance at -6 with 100% research" you mean are now at deficit research of -6 gold per turn at 100% research.

What you need to learn here is that 100% research is not a realistic proposition once you start expanding. The important thing is gold per turn and beakers per turn. What I'd be more interested in knowing is what your gold per turn is at 0% research.

The solution is called binary research. As you expand, run 0% research for brief periods of time to fund expansion and your next tech. A good time to start doing this is after Writing. Build a library or two and start running scientists immediately - generally your first GS will create an academy in you cap.

Make sure you get trade routes asap via roads, rivers and coast to boost your overall commerce; thus, your beakers per turn and gold per turn. Foreign trade routes even better. This is valuable stuff.

So basically, you need to rethink here how you run your research slider. It does not always have to be at 100% or even some % in between. For the most part, I mainly run my slider at either 100% or 0%.

Definitely post saves as well with your question so we can really see what is going on and give you more pointed advice.

Lastly, remember that Land is power in this game. yeah, you have to think about what you are doing when it comes to expansion and understand how to keep things up while you do, but don't nerf yourself because of a perceived notion on how to run your sliders. Those cities and land will pay off immensely in short time.

Thank you for the quick answer. I have looked at the Strategy and Tips section a lot in the past few days but a lot of it does fly over what I can play with because 90% of posts are based on the Beyond the Sword expansion. I am trying my best to learn as quickly as possible ^^. I will post in strategy and tips from now on. sorry for misplacing.

Well, we can still help you with prior versions, although you really should get BTS. (no you must get BTS ;))

With some luck, in 3-4 days I will have it :). I am experiencing a move right now so can't exactly go out buying a computer game ;). I have to pack, pack, pack... And conquer.

Just pay movers to do all that for you while you go out and buy BTS and play in your empty house ;)
