After selecting the options for a new game a voice over starts talking about your Civ selection and the map is generated. Before this finishes, the game crashes to desktop.

Several people on steam forums are reporting same issues. I suspect a whole heap others are too. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=17068916&posted=1#post17068916

Interestingly, the problem seems to go away somewhat randomly when I select duel map size?

System specs please.

Specs are:

Vista 32bit
i7 930
GTX 480
6Gb Ram

Latest nVidia drivers are installed. Going to try some nVidia beta drivers. Not hopeful though.

Problem seems to be related to either map size or number of civs. I am trying lots of different combinations of game conditions to try and narrow down which options are causing it to crash.

I should also point out I have been playing the demo for the last few days with no problems.

Okay, these specs are fine.

There have been some reports that big maps will bring the game to crash.
Any experiences with small maps?

As I mentioned previously, yes it is related to map size. However, it looks likes it more to do with the number of civs rather then physical size of map. If I select large map and then manually change number of civs to 2, then the game loads fine.

Just tried a standard map with normal settings and it crashed right after it launched.

Before that, I had a crash that took out my entire system... not just Civ. Had to force shut down. That is not good at all.

Windows 7. specs are fine.

BUGGGGGYYYYY!!!

I have fixed this problem on my PC.

What I did was:
1. Use windows update to install a heap of reccomended stuff
2. Use windows update to install Vista SP2 (had SP1)
3. Use windows update to install Windows Vista Platform Update (gives you DirectX 11)
4. Run game in DX11 mode.

I do not know which one of these steps is responsible, but I suggest everyone with this problem try them.

I was having this same exact problem on my system.
i7 920
gtx 295

Latest drivers and all that good stuff. After tinkering around I managed to fix the problem and hope this will also correct your problem.

I found that the crashing was being caused when I adjusted my video settings from the defaults. I know that my computer can handle everything maxed but whenever I set it to this, the game would crash when starting a new game. If I left everything at default the game would load a new game just fine.

From what I could narrow down, its either adjusting the Shadows, Leader detail (cant remember what this option was exactly), or the Fog of War detail. Anytime I adjusted these options the game would crash on a new game. Everything else I adjusted and works fine.

Hope this helps and it seems like it's just a driver issue and can be an easy fix for Nvidia or a patch from the devs.

MrRoboto's solution worked perfectly for me. Can now play any combination of settings.

so play the game at default settings is a solution? Ha ha ha ha.

Here is my game file... it crashes at the end of the turn. Happened twice in a row.
