Making Unique Improvements / Buildings Carry Over

Currently when you conquer a city, all of its unique improvements disappear. This means that a lot of times a nice city from Gilgamesh or Cleopatra becomes a barren landscape that you have to rework with your less-suitable improvements. I think both gamewise and historically it might be interesting to let them carry over.

If the people on the land you settle built good forts or farms, you're not going to demolish and replace them. You'll repurpose and keep using them. This would also allow for a more interesting "mixing" of cultures as the game goes on. If an Egyptian city with sphinxes is conquered by Gilgamesh who builds ziggurats alongside them, it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting and it helps show the history of the city.

I don't know how difficult this would be to implement via a mod or in the game itself, but I think it could be a pretty cool improvement.
