I can't find answer to this anywhere and no one seems to have asked the question.

What is the advantage to building the Manhattan Project?

The only advantage I can see is if you are losing the game and want to put all civillizations on equal terms.

If you are the civ leader, should you never build it and strive to thwart other civs from doing so?

It generates culture if you are going for a cultural victory. IMO, I think that in order for a civ to build nuclear weapons each individual civ should build their own Manhattan project instead of one civ.

:wavey: Welcome, haideskairos.

Whether you build the Manhattan Project or not depends on a few things. For one, if the AIs don't want it and you want nukes :nuke: you might build it, especially if the AIs don't have the resources and you do. However, most of the time the AIs all want to build the Manhattan Project, so I'd let them waste their shields and build more important modern wonders. If you are desperately losing you could get some nukes, but I'd rather get a few Mech Infantries unless there's a big stack of AI units about to get you. I wouldn't use Manhattan Project for culture (800 shields for 2 culture per turn, and the risk of getting nuked?)

I agree with king PJ; Manhatten should be a small wonder.. and so should Apollo Program. I never build it unless i have nothing else to build, am not at war, and already have my SDI small wonder built or about to be built.. and even then, it's only to wait for the AI to unleash nuclear war.

cant you manually set that wonder to a small wonder?
why wont that work?

Better yet, if you want to be evil, try what others have already said in a previous nukes thread. The completion of the MP triggers all civs the ability to build nukes, provided if they have the resources. We all know this. However, what is not so well known is that the destruction of the MP will end all civs ability to build nukes. So if you don't want to deal with the enemy having nukes, and you don't care much for them yourself, build the MP, and disband the city that built it. Now, if you can build the MP with a great leader in a town that can be sacrificed, even better. Not recommended for metros that have Leos, Sun Tzu's, Sistine, Bach's, etc etc etc. :D

I usually build it when I want to start nuking, but that's just me.

You can take it one step futher. When you get MP pick the option that lets you view the city that built the MP. Use the arrows at the top to toggle to all your cities and start nukes in most. Now when your cities finish disband the city with the MP. You will be the only one with nukes.

There was a thread about this last week.

That is a tip and a half! :D

I thought at the conclusion of that thread, someone tested it in the latest patch and it did not work (everyone could build nukes when the MP was destroyed)? I cannot find the thread now, it does not seem to have been archived by google yet.

IMHO That would unbalance the game and make the powerful more powerful and the weak weaker when everybody would have to build the wonder before they could build nukes.

You do know that a 20 second mod can make it a small wonder (and it worked correctly last time I tried it). ssvensson's humble opinion is correct, it make the strong stronger and the weak weaker in most game that I tried it in.

then at least the civ who builds should get a free tac nuke, or an icbm.
or a bomber airplane with a nuke onboard! :D
yes thats best, a bomber. thats how the first nuke was delivered to hiroshima.

Yes that was me I think, Tested it in vanilla Civ with the last patch v.1.29 at Diety.
It does not seem to work; I abandoned the city with the MP, (I had just captured it as I never build it myself) and I could still build Tactical Nukes. I am fairly sure the AI carried on building them as well.
Perhaps the nukes disappearing with the MP's destruction was a bug with the unpatched version of CivIII which the poster who started that thread was using.
I do have Conquests but have only just got round to using it, (I have been busy in the other world for last year) but I doubt if this 'exploit' works with that either.
The thread was 'Only you can prevent nuclear war' in Strategies & Tips.

It is not necesary to spice up the MP - it is powerful enough already!!

If the AI is building it - Fine! Then u get to build nukes when its done.

If YOU build it - Even finer!! just have a prebuild or two ready when its done switch to nukes and u'll have the nuclear edge right from the start!

Culture. Also i'm not positive with this one and i'm probably wrong but the city that makes the manhatten progect might have a slightly less amount of turns needed for a nuclear weopons. That and the great wonder helps your power rating.
