This is something that harks back to the early days of Demogame 1. In fact, some 2 years ago. ;)

What is a Manifest Destiny in the demogame? A long term goal that we want to achieve, no matter what our final objective is. In DG1, it was to "Control the northern part of the continent". For those of you who weren't in DG1, we had a continents setting, only the continents were very convuluted, and resulted in a more pangaea-like landmass, with many landbridges and chokepoints.

In DG2, we sort of had one. To defeat Russia. (it was a long-running theme).

So, what should our Manifest Destiny be? To conquer Russia? To conquer our starting continent? Conquer the Greecan/Egyptian island? (as Rik calls it, "Paradise").

I think that occupying our entire continent should be a major long-term goal for us. We would undoubtedly become the most powerful nation in the world, and there are significant advantages to owning the whole continent (i.e. the AI has to do an amphibious assault if it wants to attack us, which they are generally not at all good at). After that, we can consider whether we want to continue our conquests further and win by domination or conquest, or win by more peaceful means. I think our first step to this goal should be taking over Russia. They are a weak target and we should start making preparations to attack them fairly soon.

We now have 4 Egyptian cities within our borders too, so we could clear the land of Egyptian influence. (Back in DG1, there'd be a couple of threads about Egypt right now. Gameplay and Roleplay).

Yeah, that would probably be a good idea as well, but they could always send more settlers until we were in a position to stop all traffic to the continent (or at least our area of it). I think it would be better to wipe out Russia first, then take the Egyptian colony cities.

Looking at the world, it is easy to predict that the main power struggle will be between us and Persia. The question thus is: How to pepare for it? And the answer is: Thru superior production and science.

Thus we have to control as much as possible of our continent, maybe part or all of Egypt or Greece to get the incense, maybe establish a beachhead on the other continent.

We want to take care of Russia before they get cossacks, but that is not urgent.

We want to eliminate Babylon, but that is not urgent either.

I would suggest to go for Egypt first: we gain 4 cities on our continent, which will be productive. We will get incense as trade good. (Initially I would bring in Greece, wait till Egypt captures Knossos, even help them blocking the 2 hills towards Greece with knights, capture Knossos with 4 incense and iron.) Knights should easily be able to capture the Egyptian cities on our continent. Then we need only limited defense (some swords, 3 knights) to defend the west against invasions.

We then might go for Babylon and the wines. Controling luxuries is the way to keep AIs unhappy and thus cripple them. It is also great to strenghen smaller civs vs in this case Persia.

Next obviously will be Russia. Germany is a long way down south and thus we should have cavalry before attacking them. Peaceful India might buy our techs and give us money.

<Environemental settings>: Rik has not seen the 510 AD save yet. No screenshots have been posted. Rik is as blank as an in 410 AD born child can be.

<Personal mood>: Rik has had a tough, stressy day in RL yesterday, Rik has a tight schedule for today and tonight. His tiredness is showing and blocking his rational thinking.

Why not try some fun long term goal ? Capture the continent, destroy the Zulu etc. are all so normal. We could do with some more fun, and this is a possibility.

More fun goals:
* Get a size 12 city on each landmass (no matter how big or small).
* Capture all cities whose name start with "D" or "G" or "4".
* Blockade the largest non-fanatican continent by galleys in a ring at least 1 water-tile from the shore.
* Get a monopoly in <random resource> and found the Fanatican Rubber Company. (In case the monopoly we want is rubber)
* Raze every Capital of each Civ that are in the Space-Race (including our own).
* Write "DG4" with Forts on the map.

In your tough, stressed out mind, you hit the nail on the head! ;) A Manifest Destiny should be a more fun, goal. Like, take out Egypt, Greece, Babylon, Russia (northern half). Doesn't have to be strategy, or how should we do it, but just some goal.

Back in DG1, when I had the Spice Trader's Guild, my group's goal was to push for us in getting all the spices in the world (which we did...).

Short-term goal - remove any trace of the foul Egyptians from our defined territory.

Medium-term goal - remind the tainted Babylons that there is a cost to be paid for war, and that they haven't paid enough. Yet.

Long-term goal - Take the entire continent. It's ours, stay off. "All these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landings there."

I agree completely. :goodjob:

I don't see why our goals have to be so war like. I like the size 12 city on each continent. If we have to conquer cities, I'd rather we do it by the greatness of our society (although this is impossible in late game). Also, I think it would be neat if we were the center of all culture and history for the rest of the known world (like ancient China was for much of the East); this would mean growing fast and wide while achieving the best technology and building all the most appropriate wonders (great and small).

Or we could just trade rubber. That's cool too!

Control all stratigic and luxery resources in the whole world. Complete Monopely :) :) :)

Problem is, we'll have to wait for Astronomy to get them, or invade India and capture the Great Lighthouse. :)
