@obsolete
I suppose I had the advantage of knowing my strategy before the game started. I'm what you, specifically you, call a marathon noob and on that speed Skirmisher warfare is a viable option and I simply wanted to see whether or not it's a viable strategy here. What supported my decision even further was the poor starting location which still had enough hammers to pump out skirmishers.
On top of that, I recall reading that as far as hammer/strength conversion goes, Skirmisher is unparalleled until Knights come in so they're actually a pretty decent fighting unit.
I agree with you on the point that this map doesn't do anything in terms of learning how to master Immortal or civ at all but instead you're either forced to sit on a very undesirable piece of land with a guaranteed eternal war on your hands - that is until you can overcome Shaka. Given his terrain, however, that's very unlikely to happen any time soon and with that in mind I'm fairly sure 75%+ of the saves will just end up trying to grab as much land as possible from the jungle belt while setting up a defensive position on some hill and brace for impact.
As far as economy and teching goes... well, if one can overcome Shaka in the first 100 turns I would say it's possible just to cottage the entire island and grab a tech lead for any win.
I'm feeling pretty confident about my save too and it actually does lead to a very boring scenario as you mention.
Spoiler :
