manualless problems

So I just purchased the Jewel-Case edition of Civ 2 and I am a total novice. I'm in my first game and my capital city is startig to have these icons that look like they are warning me about potential pollution when I zoom on the city. If I knock off a few squares, some of these go away but then I have a food shortage. What is happening here?

Two other questions. How do I capitalize production when I had a city building a wonder that is now done. I saw this referenced on this CivFanatics site and I don't know how to do it.

Is there anywhere I can geta manual?

Thanks for any help. I played the first Civ game many years ago and finally broke down and committed to 2. I love these games.

First, welcome to you Civ2rookie. It's apparently your 1st post. Keep on. I'll answer your questions briefly:
_ don't be afraid by pollution warning. You can let one or 2 square become polluted. That doesn't matter, since as soon as they're polluted, just send 1 or a hord of settlers/engineers to clean that up. Don't worry. Never withdraw workmen form a square for fear of pollution!
_when another civ completes a wonder before you, you can always switch your production to anything else, including another wonder. Sometimes with a loss of several shields.

I'd gladly send you the manual of both Civ 1 and 2 but I'll have to scan 2*200pages = 400pages. Too lazy

Hakan, I'd like a copy of the pdf too please.

Thanks for the quick follow up guys. Man, this game is awesome. I just went home for my lunch break and I had to play a couple of turns.

Hakan, I assume the classics civ manual is different from the Civ2 one, let's see if anyone else posts with a manual before I have you send something that big. Thanks. I went through the basics on this site and they gave me a pretty good start

Genghis, thanks a bunch. That's good to hear about the pollution, cause if I took them off any more than one or two squares I was gonna have a food shortage.

I reread the page (in the Basics of War section) where I saw the reference to Capitalization when a Wonder is already built. I had muisunderstood it, it's once you discover Capitalization, that it becomes an option. I haven't discovered it yet.

BTW, civ2rookie, you should really try to build mass transit. It'll decrease pollution level!

Welcome to Civ2.

Your questions have been largely answered; I should just like to add that if its still available, build Hoover Dam: increases production and cuts polllution. Most civ'ers agree that its one of the best wonders in the game.

(Also, how about a "more confident" name than "rookie"?)

Well I got another copy of Civ 2 classic a couple of weeks ago, and this time it was the jewel case version. Mine had a copy of the manual on the disk in the directory /manual/ there should be a file called manual.pdf and if for, some reason, you don't already have acrobat reader installed I believe there is also a copy of that in the same folder. I sent a copy of the manual to Thunderfall, we'll see if he ever gets around to posting it

Sure enough, once I explored the manual was there. The page I bought it off said there was no manual so I hadn't even looked.

Okay, Andu, okay. So "rookie" may not sound so confident but for the sake of these boards I thought it was to the point. I'm thinkin' about goin' with "civ2moreconfidentthanrookie". Or "Dan". One of the two.

And thanks for the Hoover Dam advice, Andu. I'm still on my very first game and I haven't gotten to the Hoover Dam yet. The pollution warnings came from King Richard's Crusade bumping up the production in my capital but an advance (I can't remember which)made the Crusade worthless and so all is pretty safe right now.

Did you actually make it back to work?

How in the world did you only play "a couple of turns"?? I sit down at this game and next thing I know its only 4 hours until I need to get up to go to work the next day - and I'm too old for that

Well, Enchanter, only fear of losing that job. I ate cereal so as not to lose any time preparing food, I set the alarm, and kept reminding myself that I would be home in a few hours and could play again soon. And luckily I live only about five minutes from my job.

The first day I played it (Tuesday) I killed six hours without even a drink of water. And I'm too old for that too. It ended up in my dreams (zzzzz- must send freight to Babylon-zzzzz- must kill barbarians near Sippar- zzzzz). I sucked at work the whole next day. So I went home and played at lunch.

Brings back memories doesn't it? When I first got civI my mum would come into my room and have a conversation with me and I would swear blind that it had never taken place. I must have done three or four "all nighters" in the past as well, just thought "fu%^k it, sleep tommorrow". I tend to go have a game play it solidly for two days, finish it and then leave it alone for a couple of weeks.

When I play civ the whole day very intensively, the game continues in my dreams, too. It's then funny to wake up and realize that the "dream game" brought some even good ideas how to go on with the "real game".

Anybody else dreamed about building cities and conquering the world?
