For all I know, there is a map like this out there already. But I've looked around and haven't found one.

I'd love to play a map that included Scandinavia and Iceland in the North, Persia in the East (maybe right up to the Indus River), Nubia in the South (nothing further south than, say, the upper fringes of the Congolese jungles, if at all), and Morocco to the west.

And a map of 100x100 (or so) wouldn't be so huge that my turns would take meal-times to finish.

This way I can play the Assyrians, Alexander, the Vikings and all the fun Ancient Near East and Medieval Stuff I can think of all on one map. Yippee.

Any takers? (Or any re-directors?)

Thanks.

If someone could direct me to a ".bmp to .bix" converter program, then I could snip out the part of the world I want from el mencey's giant-frigging Earth map. But again, does such a utility exists? I cannot see it in our wee utility forum. Darned if I know how to navigate my way through that Apolyton place...

Obvioulsy, I'm in a different time zone than everybody else. I'm talking to my self in this thread.

Anyhoo, I signed up at Apolyton just so I could download the bmp to bic editor...

...but that doesn't work on bix files. It won't open bix files. And el mency's 362x362 world map is neither available in bic format, nor can I figger out how to convert it to bic format. It's probably too big, eh?

So I'm back to square one. Any help, suggestions?

This is the general idea, here.

It seems pretty tall and narrow, but I hope that's because the projection of the picture I used is skewed (Mercator?).

I dunno if it would be better to clip off the top of Scandinavia in order to force the Vikings to go naval. Hence the red line.

If the map maker is limited to perfectly square maps, then it might have to look like this...

...or, on the other hand, the Atlantic Ocean could be eliminated and India could be inserted, along with a goodly part of Central Asia...

I think this projection lends itself better to civ...more Europe, less Sahara, less tall and skinny. Too bad I don't know where to find a shot of it in decent colours.

Note the last two pics have assumed a chopped off Lappland, but that's not necessarily the best. I really don't know. Suggestions welcome.

1/ Not everybody spends 24 hours a day on this forum so, especially when you ask for something, give some time for people to respond.

2/ Here is a possible picture of the area, tell me what you think. It could go a little South or West. And what size ? Small size will make all details dissappear.

3/ But I am busy so if I make you a basic map with seas and rivers, would it be OK for you to complete and finish it, Mithadan ?
(first I need to make a thorough check of existing maps "just in case"...).

Oh, that's wonderful!

3) Absolutely, I'd be happy to take over after you sketch out an outline. My biggest trouble is the bmp to bic (then to bix) conversion. Figgering out the terrain placements will be easier once I've got something to work with. I've been tinkering around with that gigantic NASA map to see what I could get, see below. Not much, really.

And please, if you're busy, don't go and burden yourself with my request.

As to existing maps, if you find one that suits, that would be sweet. The best I've found is the TAM 1.5b Large Mediteranean map, but it only has Denmark in it and at 140x140, it's a tad too big for my liking. Which brings me to...

2) I love the pic you've got. South is perfect. Just so long as the Arabian peninsula is navigable, I'm happy. (Don't forget, nobody's here to make me happy!:)) West, I don't need Bombay. Indus river would be fun (another flood plain, I daresay), but Alexander never crossed it, so I don't need it either. But if I get Bombay, sure, why not? Maybe I do need it if I'm going to include the Indus. It's hard to tell so far from the maps I'm looking at. North, who cares. I could go either way on Lappland. Whatever happens, happens. This is sweet. I love it.

Size, I'm thinking around 100 pixels for the vertical axis, anyway. I don't know if horizontal axes can be longer. It depends on what can be done. This slanted Civ perspective throws me off. A perfectly square 100x100 bitmap looks nice and rectangular in game. Whatever. 140x140 is too big for my computer (900Mhz, 140 MB RAM) when most of the map is land and twenty-odd civs doing their thing. 100, 125, somewhere around there. I don't know what's possible.

Obvioulsy, I'm in a different time zone than everybody else. I'm talking to my self in this thread.
1) I didn't mean to imply that I was impatiently waiting for other's to respond. Sorry if it came accross that way. I certainly don't hang around this forum all day, either. I was just reflecting on how I kept posting to my own thread, which seemed a tad self-centered. I figgered part of the reason was that most posters on this board aren't Europeans who can browse the forum on a weekday afternoon, but I didn't think my thread was being unduly ignored. The other threads weren't exactly hot potoatoes, either! :)

I kept a running update of my abortive attempts, instead of continually editing the first post. And I don't know how to attach more than one image at a time (although I reinstalled photoshop so I could start making composite images). I'm actually quite honoured that anybody would bother helping me with my measly request.

So thanks, Lou Long! :D

Here's the .bmp, if it's any use. There's no reason why that pic of your's won't kick my ass. It's 100x165, but that might be impractical. The red line might mess things up too!:o

OK I have an important oral to prepare beginning of next week so I don't know if it will be before. Otherwise, be sure you will have it for next week's friday ! OK ?

Woah, no rush dude! :) I have my thesis defence this Friday anyway. Thanks. Sweet cans.

Good luck to you ! What subject ?

BTW what do "sweet cans" mean ?

Philosophy: the problem of evil and the environment.

Sweet cans? I use it for an expression of exitement and anticipation. Something my weird friends used to say. I think it's out of date, though. I'm always behind the times. I don't know what sweet cans really are, though! Stupid jargon!
