Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere already but Ive only got so much time in the day!

Anyway, a big thing for me with Civ 5 is time...I want the game to last as long as possible. Ive never played Civ on anything less than Epic and usually play on Marathon speed. I despise getting units and technologies so quick that you never get to actually use them, just doesnt seem 'right' to me. Yeah, games can take weeks and months even but thats the way I like it! A whole game of Civ you can complete in one day just isnt right! ;)

So...im hoping that Firaxis keep up the tradition of having a very long game option. I cant be the only one to think this? Far from it I guess! :)

Yes I too hope we get all the range of Speeds and Map sizes too in Civ5. This was one thing missing in CivRev for example, and that really depressed me, but we have no reason to assume it wont be in Civ5 the games are nothing alike.

Fact is I will buy the game regardless, however I am hoping for some confirmation on the different map sizes and game speeds at some point from Frix/2k either by podcast or interview or whatever, and I hope with the vanilla release we get speeds from quick to marathon or even slow speeds too, and from tiny to huge maps or even larger maps too.

I always or usually tend to play on Marathon/Huge games and I would prefer to not change this.

Ofcourse it will depend on game mechanics as to what map sizes and speeds are given, hopefully we can still all play our favourites, if however we are unfortunate to not get them, I am sure a mod will be released to modify map sizes / game speeds, It will probably be the first one developed if someone finds out a size or speed as been removed. However I would prefer a good range of speed and size differences developed by Frix put into the game at vanilla, even if its only tiny to huge and quick to marathon, although I would prefer even bigger and even slower game choices from Vanilla, if this is all thier will be which I suspect will be the case then thats fine too. I can live with huge&marathon, but I would like to try out bigger and slower games the mods on Civ4 dont work for me, they always crash and I will avoid them in Civ5 if I can.

Different game speeds and map sizes have been mentioned in an interview a while back, so they will probably be in. Whether Civ5 will have the same number of game speeds is unknown.
Here is the interview:link, just go to 4:30 and it is mentioned.

I am a big fan of marathon speed as well. In fact, if there isn't a marathon mode then I will take three times as long to take each turn just to even things out.

Oh I never said Marathon was a waste of time, I too only play Marathon and Epic games. I was merely trying to enlighten OP that doubtless there will be a Marathon game speed and that this topic is a waste of his/her time (seeing as he/she said he/she hasn't got time to search the forum to see if anybody else had also requested marathon game speed)...

Obviously the irony was lost on the moderator and the other posters...

correct me if im wrong but marathon wasn't included in vanilla civ 4, so no reason to assume it will be in this vanilla.

Well the fact that you have asked the question has put doubt in my mind but I'm 90% sure it was in Vanilla.

I can't play even epic as I feel thats to fast. I propose 6 speeds.

Revolution
Quick
Normal
Epic
Marathon
Immortal

Immortal being around 2500 turns :-)

No,marathon wasn't included in vanilla Civ4.I also play on this speed, and I would like to know if this will be available also.

IIRC Marathon was speed was released in one of the later patches for Vanilla Civ 4, I remember Epic being the slowest speed to begin with.

Here's a review from 2005:

In response to fan requests to adjust the pace of the game, developer Firaxis has added three speeds: the surprisingly fast normal speed, the even-faster quick speed (in which you gain money, resources, and technology at a faster rate), and the slower-paced epic speed. While epic speed seems better suited to purists who prefer to take their time, the quick and the normal speed are conducive to much faster play. In fact, in quick speed it can actually take as little as an hour or two (or less) to take over the world. And even normal speed moves at a brisk pace.

My apologies I always remember Marathon being an option but then again I didn't buy Civ 4 when it first came out. Still I do think Marathon (or the similar setting) will be included straight away.

How many of you guys have actually finished a marathon game. Must admit I never completed any of the 20 odd games I played at marathon. I would get to the point where I knew I was going to win, quit the game and start another.

Those huge end game turns were the pits and spoiled an otherwise good game. maybe 1UPH will fix this problem.
