Marines

I think you're right. They may not have the huge attck as a tank or any other type of mobile ground unit, but they are good. They can invade enemy citys from the transport which saves you one turn and are pretty cheap.

They also have some faults, like a low defense and eventually become, what I call obsulete, worse than other exsisting units and can't be upgraded!

To relate to real life, they as any other unit should be used with Infantry (or any other defensive unit). There only competiter in this genra is the Paratrooper who I think is equally valuable when used with other units such as Infantry and Marines.

the fact that they can attack straight off the boat makes them great for the invasions not only because of the fast attack, but also because you don't have your stacks of units sitting around on the continent getting blown apart as you wait the turn to attack.

I agree, marines suck.

infantry is discovered b4 marines...so the only use for marines is to capture workers:smoke: ..useless unit:sheep:

I thought they were useless as well, until I came across those one tiled island cities. No other unit can take over these locations.
Knocking an enemy civ out of a continent in the middle ages, only to have his capital revert to one of those island fortresses is such a drag. You end up wishing those marines would come alot sooner.

Marines are the same effective as tanks are when considering assault big costal city on the hill. Think, marines ignore walls, city bonuses, terrain bonuses, fortification bonuses... It is like double attack number. So think about marines as 16-attack units :) BTW, I usually take first costal city with marines, then pull in the new city transports full with tanks, then I take 2-3-4 other cities by tanks in the same turn before enemy can prepare for defence. 3 transport with 4 marines and 4 tanks/modern armor in each with 3 carriers with 12 bombers for support can take 6-8 cities in the same turn because enemy is not ready. One turn for unloading tanks make a HUGE difference, since enemy have enough time to prepare for defence. When declare war and attack in the same turn his defenders are not fortified yet!

Marines are what they are - specialized to do one thing, attack from boats. When you need 'em, they are an awesome unit because nothing else will do the job. If you don't need 'em, don't try and use 'em among the tanks and infantry - they dry out!! Keep 'em on the beaches where they can catch some surf.

I do wish they had a higher defensive value, though. Maybe instead of the F-15, US Marines could be a UU with the defense of a tank....? I'd be more tempted to play the Americans.

Marines are the best (non-tank) land unit! DO you agree

Hmm that kinda like saying "Bowie, the best knife to bring to a gunfight" It may be true but you will still be dead when the other guy brings the tank/modern armor up against your marines.

Uh.... no. They don't have enough defense to work well.... and a few meager ancient or middle aged defensive units can wipe out a transport full of marines. i agree though... sometimes u need them!!!!

Looking at tech chart and.... yup, marines are the best non-tank land unit. Of course, when their nearest competition is an age behind them, they kinda win by default. I think that they need to be improved upon so that they aren't so specialized (read useless except in rare situations). Same goes with paratroopers. Give me a break, only good froma city with airport, and only a 8 tile radius? They were WAY better in Civ2 where they could go from any city, and any airbase (where did these go btw?) and attack the same turn. Almost always died unless fighting stone age guys, but they served their country. Nowadays you gotta walk them to the battle. BOOOOO!

Hey,if you don't like the marines don't use 'em.If you think they are to weak, make them better like I did.I gave them 10/8 instead of 8/6.This way their attack is on par with the Infatry and the defence is better than any older attacking units.I change it 'couse I didn't like to when I took a city with a marine and a couple of knights (yes knights) came and killed my marine.I thought an M16 had better range than a sword :crazyeye: .Silly me.

Yeah.

I still can't find out how those longbowmen defeated my panzer...

Huh? It's really not that hard -- 4 attack versus 8 defense. Two longbowmen have a 46% chance to kill a tank. Bring three and they have a 73.9% chance.

I forgot who said it, but there was a quote something along the lines of "Think of these not as real world units, but instead as game pieces with A/D/M values". If Longbowmen killing a tank disturbs you that much, think instead of knights killing a tank. Both units have 4 attack.

Cheers,
Shawn

It's not that I don't like marines or appreciate them in those limited circumstances when I do need them. The same with paratroopers, when I can use them they are great. The problem is I generally tend to use them in that specific way maybe once every two or three games, so I typically don't make many of either.

So it's not that I don't like them, but I wish I had a non-tank unit I could fight more effectively with on ground. Now they "clean up", follow the invasion and quell resistors or eliminate older or damaged escaping units.

Hahaha,

Dirty way to go.

Panzerguy 1:"Hey, what's that guy on the horse doing over there."
Panzerguy 2:"I think he's coming right for us."
Panzerguy 1:"Yeah right! I'll eat my shoe if he even dares to come near us."

*BOINK*

Knight lies on the ground, whining because his lance broke.

Panzerguy 2:"Well?"

Panzerguy 1 chokes to death attempting to chew German boot to pieces.

Ooooookaaaaaayyy...

What was this tread about?

Duh, it's a mobility kill, obviously!

The knight pokes the spokes of the tank's wheels with his lance, and then the treads start to come off the wheels...
