Hey every one I been reading the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson and i wanted to create a mod to best represent the books. The book takes to Mars on boards the Aries the international space craft. The First Hundred set up the first colony Underhill back on Earth things are a mess overpopulation, lack of resources, large national dept and much more. Nations are setting up colonys across the planet but back on Earth Transnational list are buying out countries like bussinesses and pretty soon Mars is a Corperate project. Members of the first hundered have devloped a prolonged life vacsine and larger nations of the world have promissed it to all their citizens but waiting list are long and this has made the over population worst. The transnationalist are pouring billions of millions of dollars into Terraforming Mars into a Earth like planet at all cost Some of the first hundred are aganst it while other are for it. With the construction of a space cable its a whole lot easy to get resources off Mars and get people on With mass mirgration to Mars from Earth and the growing power of the Transnationalist are causing problems. The some people of Mars are unhappy with the corprate run world and in 2061 rebell but the power of the transnational list is not fully known the un which the Transnationalist use as their personal stamp for a goahead and under The U.N. they crush the rebellion the survisors go underground.
you get the picture i think so what i want to do is have a trilogy of scn. about the books i want to make it where the first Hundred settle mars and starts terraforming.
My problem is to how to put this into the game

Your in luck, there are two Mars terrain packs availible here, one would go well as a Pre-Terraformed Mars, the other would be a decient Post-Terraformed Mars.

I'm working on a series of Future Scenerios, one involves a war between Earth, the Space Colonys, and Mars.

*sigh* makes me miss the three map levels available in Civ2 ...

How do you plan to solve the globe problem? Unlike, Earth, the Martian poles are both prime real estate, the place where water and dry ice live. They can't be marginalized.

Maybe the three ring circus could be done with terrain type reassignment.

Start with a 300 by 100 map of nothing but ocean, except the ocean represents space. Have a 100 by 100 map of Earth (except using only coast and sea for water) at one end and a 100 by 100 map of Mars at the other end, and have a 100 by 100 space of space in the middle. The map wraps along the short axis, the equators.

In any terraforming operation of mars, one of the things to do would be to melt both Icecaps. This would thicken the atmosphere and create shallow oceans. The vegetation though, would have to be added separately.

I'm not sure thats what you were talking about though Tholish...

No, I was talking about the problem of representing the poles on the map. How do you get them both without massive distortion? This problem is unimportant on Earth because the poles are poor real estate anyway, so the cylindrical map works fine. But on Mars you can't eliminate anything except a big cratered area in the southern hemisphere to the side of Hellas. For my old PTW mod, Marz (its horrible, and derivative and broken; don't try it even if you can find it) I took a big childrens ball from the store and drew a map of Mars on it, then drew a four pointed star in this crater area and used the edges of that star as the edges of a square map (by hand drawing lines that went around to corresponding lines on the opposite side) including all the rest of the planet, except that the pointy ends of the star, on the globe, became the middles of the sides of the square, so it was outrageously distorted. Then I used the grid coordinates from that map to hand enter the civ map.

The poles will melt eventually, but at first they are useful. I used runaway pollution to represent terraforming, ie pollution is good. It took one turn to clean up and all kinds of stuff made it. I programmed things so global warming would turn desert and tundra into forest and stuff. Unfortunately, no amount of global warming will ever create coast, so the progression included land only.

I eagerly anticipate your mod, all kinds of sci fi mods. I'm on a one month vacation and am gonna have a blast by gum. So please hurry. I was looking for scifi mods and saw an old space mod that didn't look too appealingly realistic, though it seemed to have cool stuff by the thread. So I was thinking the way to do it was just the solar system, and have planets be little islands in a big ocean (i've made a 5 by 5 earth map with 8 starting civs). Only I'm thinking use land terrain made to look like ocean for space, so you can put space colonies there, use sea only for the atmosphere. Basically. Saw your thread and thought hey, just Earth and Mars is easy. Only two planets, linear relationship always.

(I was going to do the solar system by simply lining the planets up, except staggered, and wrapping. Rationalization being, yeah, they move relative to each other and at any given time have different arrangements, but if one move is one year, the average location of an inner system planet can be represented by a single location and the outer system planets aren't moving very much in that time. Jupiter could be the reference, and the proportional movement of next fastest, Saturn, would be unimportant in the time scale of the game, for geometrical purposes and even if it wasn't I could use the same rationalization as for the inner system.)

I second that. The only reason I've scrapped my Riftwar mod ideas.

I did the wonder "Conquest of Mars" and the Alien (movie series) leaderhead, maybe they could be usefull to your mod.

For terraformed Mars terrain.....

I've recently installed SMAC, and could attempt a terrain conversion, if you'd like. Basically you could do a map based on mars, bu with all the low areas flooded, and nothing but desert and plains tiles, with the ability to plant forests and irrigate right away.

But that's just a suggestion....

I was worried about earth being on a map because earth isnt in a the book
much just talk about it. What i need to ponder was how terraform is there a way to make ice turn into coast with global warming.

Global warming will not produce coast, ever. I made a test mod with
1. ICBMs available for free, 0 cost
2. Nothing but desert
3. A global warming sequence that turned desert into plains and plains into grassland and grassland into coast. I set coast as the base terrain even.
I nuked the snot out of every available empty space for hours until there was nothing but nice lush earthlike terrain but nothing decayed into coast, no matter what. Furthermore, pollution does not affect water. It will not turn ocean into sea either.

However, you can make it possible to plant forest on anything, and when you cut the forest down, you get grassland. You can use this to turn mountains and hills into grassland, and if you reset base terrain it will work for tundra and plains also. In fact, you make coast have Plant Forest available, make workers amphibious, wake an amphibous worker up on a boat, plant forest in coast, and then you have the boat on a land square of forest (you can't move it out until you build a city there). Then you can chop the forest down and have grassland.
You can even make settlers amphibous, make cities on coast ok, and plant a city in the water. It will be able to make land units that sit there until they board a boat, but it will be utterly impossible to take such a city because you cannot move land units into it, even amphibious ones. And the ai will not do any of this stuff.

Not that it has anything to do with mars. Use forest and global warming. The pollution should come from two things: all buildings should produce it and population should produce it, because you will set maximum town size to 1 and maximum city size to 2. You can also make "comet impacts" (ie icbms) available, but only humans will use them. Then to make the point that the pollution is a good thing in the long run (like all that pesky oil bubbling up in your cornfield, only its infrastructure decay from climate change) let it be cleaned up in one turn. Maybe have all worker tasks take forever and have two different kinds of workers. One highly efficient so it can do real work, and the other a pollution drone good for little else (though it has to have them all, to get terraform ai strategy). Don't know if the ai would use it right.
To make the forest, make all terrains forestable and all terrains irrigatable. Perhaps you could have resources that you need to do these worker tasks (water and nitrogen come to mind), so you have to build a road (pipeline) into the square first. The ai probably wouldn't use them right though.

Mars is Tundra, Desert, Hills, and Mountais. Those terrains are not like earth terrains, however, in that they produce nothing until developed.
You could make the other land terrains function and look like Tundra Desert, Hills and Mountains. Unfortunately, you cannot do a Marslike-planet mod because civ random maps MUST include water and you cannot make water terrains funciton like land terrains. I think. Let me try...

polution is the key here i make city improvement that will add pollution to the world and city radius thus turning deserts into grass lands. am i right

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok here is what i was thinking u build a city on deserts and u terraform the land to grassland. If i make oxagen a resource will it apear on grassland and forest when there terraformed.

well i test with polution on tundra all i got was more tundra
we need ideas to make this work

also i was think has having a nitrgen resource but it needs to be mined i what a new min graphic lake a factory and i want to have domed cities

I think smoking mirror or Kinboat started a Mars scenario, based on this book. They even had three different maps made up for the three different phases of Mars or something. I wish search were re-enabled.

I had domed cities in my mod "Marz." Its on page 4 of the Completed mods forum. Its for PTW and runs real slow for some reason.

I got the domed cities (Tundra Irrigation, they were called) from the main creation forum here and have never again seen the thread to get the artists name to credit him or her.

Resources "jump" only when somebody builds a road to them. To make oxygen jump into forest, you have to have the oxygen somewhere else with some civ connected to it. Mars is lousy with oxygen, anyway. You don't need it.

Nitrogen is the key resource, though. It will be a rarity on Mars, and essential for all life--ideal to be a civ resource. Same with water. In Marz I made them both necessary for the worker jobs Irrigate and Plant Forest. You had to have a road to those resources to improve the real estate.

And you can make Tundra upgrade, or you could in PTW. Maybe I'll experiment and post a screen shot.

Also, I saw this; haven't even looked at it. Looks like a Mars mod from Russia.

Hey I would like to thank every one for there help so far From the testing we have done I can conclude that a level of Terraforming is possible and with Tholish and his domed Farms I also would like to find or have some one make a futureristic domed citie graphic for the mod since Mars air is unbreathable.
