Master of Orion Mod

I've had an idea on how you can handle the units for this mod...

It'd take for ever making fully animated spaceships for every race, or even just a bunch of generic ships, so how about just using animated icons, such as arrows and stars?

here's something of what I came up with to start with;

But I wanted it to be a bit more like a holographic tactical display...

And here is an example of what some units would be like, you would have a bunch of default icons and extras, and put them together using multi units. Different icons would mean different things. For instance you could add different coloured and numbers of stars for different roles, such as assault or deffence. You could add pilot wings for fighter support etc... The size of the arrow or icon would represen the size of the ships, while then number of icons would represent the size of the fleets...

I really like that ... it would certainly change the feel of the game ... this is only for the ships or will land units also be in this tactical screen look?

EDIT - I will be posting the tech tree very soon just waiting for vmxa to proof

I had something different in mind for ships. I was thinking that there should be a single design (to begin with) for each race. And only different sizes of this ship for the different classes.
So the humans would have
Fighter
Frigate
Cruiser Mk1, Mk2... (etc, depends on depth of tech tree and time constraints).
BattleShip Mk1...
Dreadnaught..
Maybe a single standard (galaxy wide) style for certain common ships.. scouts, outposts, colonyships, and troopships.

And as time allows, expand the ship varients per race. This should be managable, since the race numbers in this mod are probably only going to hit the dozen level at most.

Well, I'm rendering the Silicoid LH right now, and have about 4 and a half hours left for it. This will be the last MoO LH I'll be doing for a while. I've got some FF Leaderheads I want to do as well as some units to finish up, among other things.

As for the spaceships, UJ7's idea is interesting, but I like Bjorn's better, especially since that's how they essentially were in MoO II, and more so in MoO III. In MoO III, all the Humanoid races had one style, the saurians had another, the insectiods (Tachidi and Klackons) had their own, the Cyborgs (Cynoids and Meklar) had theirs and the Ichtytosian (Trillarians and Nommo) also had their own style of ships. I'd suggest maybe clamping that down a bit so that races that are even fairly similar (I.e. Cyborgs and Humanoids) share a style of ships. Just a few ideas, although when I get to doing my version of the mod, it will be kind of Moot, since spaceships will be limited to orbital fighters and bombers, and most of the fighting will be between land and naval units, befitting the shipwreaked aspect of my scenario.

For a perfect MooIII mod you'll have to make city governors compulsory and prevent the players from changing the building queue... ;) :p

Hey, Smoking mirror, that's a good idea.
I'd like to use something similar, I don't know to which extent though.
Possibly for transport ships and/or missile types. It sure looks quite nice though. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm also using something similar to Bjornlo's idea, that they have common classes(and the Dreadnought or titan type might be identical, like it was in MoO 2, but am unsure of it yet).

Anyway, mainly droped by to inform that something came up and I'll not be available for a while(circa 10-12 days). Sorry for those that Pm'd I don't have time for replies now, when I'll be back.

I will move the eyes a bit to try and convey moods, but remember, the silicoids were always bad at diplo since they were crystalline and didn't really HAVE any readily recognizable expressions.
How about if you make them shift color slightly depending on their mood? Or perhaps just density - bright/sparkly for happy and dark/gloomy for angry?

The Silicoids have been posted already, but I have tried something similar myself before on another leaderhead. The problem is that you only have 256 colours, so if you have it change from your original colours at all during the animation it can use up loads of colour slots and ruin the finished effect by making it too grainy (if dithering is used) or too patchy (if it is not).

I've posted some spaceship units in the finished units forum if they are any use I may make some more... Though I could do with suggestions, pictures etc...

Does any one know what the maximum techs per age is?
Also is the maximum number of eras = 4?

What would be the best Tech Tree ... By schools?
>Biology
>Energy
>Mathematics
>Social

... I think that having Economics will be useless as the game IMO confuses this school ...

OK as promised a breakdown of the MOO3 Tech Tree Here, a zip with text and excel documents.
Hope it helps :)

I'll use what I can from that, if something, but certainly, it's good to have.

Maximum era count= 4

I had a similar idea, frankly, with a less detailed version of crystal, but I might use Hikaro's as well, which is fine(though I'd prefer eyes be non-existant).
The color change doesn't have to be too bad, it could start from blue for neutral and go to green for worshipping/friendly and red for angry.

I'll check out your space ships. I'll come up with some pics for reference next week, prolly, but in truth, the MoO2 ships are extremelly undetailed. The space armada designs are quite close to what I'd think could be used.

I'm not going for an exact match anyway.

Right now, not really. But you knew already it's not going to be ready in a month or two. I constantly have all the projects in my sig in my mind. i'll think of rules, city names, gov types, etc, but it will not be visual all the time.

I'm not a superbeing(And don't be offended by that, it's just the truth, I'm not trying to be rude or something) to do everything in the same time. I have to work progressively.

Next update might be the new Trillarian, but it depends.

Why would I be offended? You answered my question as best as needed. I wasn't meaning to sound impatient. I know it'll be a while, just thought it'd be nice for an update. ;)

I too am not a superbeing or my own mod would have been done last year when I said I would finish it then.
:coffee: <- That is what I was doing at that time.

As I recall, I said the new trillarian will be the next update.
So here it is, and this will probably be the final version for it. Took a few hours adding and tweaking, I don't feel like reworking it.

hope you like it though. Next update date is questionable, I'll be having less time for a while.

Edit: Forgot, thanks to Bjornlo for suggestions.

Take your time, don't rush the mod. If you rush you might make mistakes and it will not be as cool. I would rather sit and wait for it to be down right then hurried and bugged.

Besides, it sounds like a lot of folks will be waiting before getting into Civ4, so there is still time to get the mod done and be played. ;)

Is this project still alive?
