Master of Orion (MOO)

I think it is weird what people have heard about all thee MOOs. Although it might sound like I think I'm right (I do), this is based on 10-15 years of experience with the series.

MOO: One of the best strategy games ever, and computer games ever. Unbelievably good replay value and fun. As good as Civ4.

MOO2: Very good game, falls short of the original MOO because of the loss of one of the dimensions of the original game, which is that NUMBERS matter. Your ship design might be great but HOW MANY you have is almost more important. Also, that plays into the longer running strategy game of aging technology and how useful it can be, which can be seriously affected by numbers. Same for other aspects of the game, where there is immense strategy surrounding all things related to HOW MUCH including population, factories, etc. The scale of your operations is critical and this aspect was lost in MOO2 and replaced with nothing, making it less deep or engaging. Its a good game, just not as good.

MOO3: Never even contemplate loading it, it would be sub par for a crappy strategy game. Its insulting next to MOO2 and is an outright laughable disgrace of a failure verses the mastery of the original MOO. It shouldn't have ever even shared the same name. NOT worth even considering.

Moo3 is of some value, if you have modified it using something like Strawberry. Up until this year, I had listed it as crap, not it does not smell quite so bad.

It's been over a decade since I played MOO1. I remember it was a decent game, though AI-less, so not really much of a challenge. When I first tried MOO2, I remember being disappointed because you couldn't build 1000s of ships. But then once I played it a few times, I found I preferred the MOO2 ships and tactical warfare and the game itself over the original. Neither have what really can be called an AI. It's more of a basic random number generator. In MOO you built more ships than the AI to win, in MOO2, you out tech them. Unfortunate neither had a real AI opposing the player, since the games themselves are outstanding in the other areas. Finding out how to mod MOO2 has sparked a new interest in the game recently.

I found too many things in MOO3 that I didn't care for and the game was full of bugs. From what I read, it was never finished and parts of the game were left out to get it out the door. The Strawberry and Tropical mods greatly improve it, and make it somewhat playable, but I found there is still too much that is wrong about this game that can not be modded (as far as I know) to really hold my interest long enough to finish a game.

I can play moo2 on hard and consistently win. Impossible is still a challenge where I won only once in modified conditions (small map with a correct race) and am trying to win on large with other races.

I get my ass handed to me in moo1 though. Even on average. I don't know whether I have such a bad luck or if I am not managing something right. Usually AI's will have 20 colonies and me 5... surrounded by uninhabitable planets and then it takes me million turns to get the tech. And when I get it someone will try to wipe me out or something. Or I just don't have the range on colony ships or whatever.

The last 2 games enemies just send their transports (didn't declare war) and when I tried to retake my planets I got war. Unfairness... And scrolling that damn map freaks me out. Wish it came with moo2 map, thats the only really bad part of it.

And this ye. Maybe I should pick silicoids or reload game when I get bad start? Duno... also it takes like 30 turns for me to scout planets around me usually and find out my start sucks.

Suggestions?

The easiest race in Moo1 is probably the Klac. They have a bonus on industry and planet techs give them a bigger boost than other races.

Some things that you can do to make it easier is to get a few more scouts out to sit on planets. Redesign scouts right away to get them cheaper. Send out the colony to a likely spot, without scouting it.

Many times that will save you some turns. Once in a while it will cost you turns. Not uncommon to only have one system that it can reach anyway.

Choose one tech tree and go 100% on it till you are close to a break through. Later you can do several at once.

Often skipping over techs will be useful. If the game is not hard for you, then you can research anyway you like.

Send out some pop to jump start new systems. You can find some info on how to decide how many and how often. even a few will help.

If you are bnordering someone, try to stand up that planet quicker. You could also make some small fighters to discourage attacks (maybe).

Consider small bombers to punish your enemies and glass them, if you cannot hold it. If you want to take it be sure to send troops enough and to time their arrival.

Lots more can be gleaned from the SG's, but you have to spend the time to read them.
