Hello! I found a lot of the colour combinations given to leaders in the base game either ugly or nonsensical. This radicalised me so I had to make a mod to fix it.

The aim was to make aesthetically pleasing colour combinations based either on historical sources, or complementing the leaders' character models!

(Brief justifications for each 'jersey' I've assigned are included playercolors.sql file as comments alongside the newly defined colours. Please feel free to provide suggestions/alterations, or to ask for more detail if interested!)

Download: https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/matts-colours.31954/

Installation: Extract the zip folder to [Drive]:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VII\Mods

Here are the main jerseys for each leader:.

Here is also a summary of all 4 jerseys I've assigned to each leaders, based on the diagram created by DarthKyofu for their leader colour mod!

i like these colors! but they're not showing up in my game. i'm not using any other color mods. do i need to start a new game to see the colors change?

Hi! Thank you, I'm glad you like them!
I think you do need to start a new game, because of how Civ seems to handle mods at the moment.
The game will automatically disable any additional content that wasn't enabled when you started your campaign.

oh! yes, that's normal for mods that store info in your saved games, but pure UI mods like this can declare that they don't affect saves.

include this block in your .modinfo in the Properties element where you declare your mod name and description.
<AffectsSavedGames>0</AffectsSavedGames>

for example, one of my UI mods looks like this:
<Properties>
<Name>LOC_MOD_BZ_MAP_TRIX_NAME</Name>
<Description>LOC_MOD_BZ_MAP_TRIX_DESCRIPTION</Description>
<Authors>beezany</Authors>
<Package>Mod</Package>
<AffectsSavedGames>0</AffectsSavedGames>
</Properties>

Thank you so much! I've updated this and there should be a new version if you follow the download link which is save game compatible.

ooh, i'm seeing colors now! and they look great! ❤️

for some reason, though, the game has decided to use Lafayette's secondary color set alongside Revolutionary Napoleon's primary set, which makes the two of them indistinguishable. i know the game has logic to avoid confusing matches like that, but it might only check once at the start of the game (based on the default game colors). so i suspect it'll work better when i start a new game with the mod.

well done!

Yeah - back before I packaged it as a mod and was just editing the game files directly I found this same thing when loading old games. I think the jersey numbers are just assigned when the game starts and never updated.

mattwho updated Matt's Colours with a new update entry:

Crossroads of the World Update

New update adds a re-colour for Ada Lovelace and for Simón Bolívar (which will automatically work once he's officially added).

Ada's main jersey is a violet colour, based on her use of bluebells as a personal motif, as seen on her letters to Charles Babbage, as well as being reminiscent of her most iconic outfit.

Bolívar's main jersey is a minor recolour of his standard colours to be slightly darker, more like base-game Isabella's yellow than Catherine's bright yellow.

mattwho updated Matt's Colours with a new update entry:

Leugi's Diplo Ribbon Colour Fixes

Incorporated Leugi's script to override a backend function that tries to adjust colours as they appear on leader diplo ribbons.

In particular, this was causing Trung Trac's primary colour scheme to appear as pink rather than red.

To integrate this change, most of the standard colours were also adjusted to be darker, because the backend function was darkening most colour schemes.

Yellow and cream coloured leader Jerseys are also darker now because of this.

Been loving my lavender Ada campaign!

Was just wondering - what's the backstory behind José Rizal's brown and white colour scheme? Other jersey mods have opted for like a blue-and-gold Philippines seal design. In the .sql it's explained as 'Philippines flag' but I'm not seeing it.

I'm also at war with Harriet Tubman in my Ada campaign, and although I love the historical flavour behind her jerseys her black-on-cream blends in a little too well with my black-on-white allied city-state units. It's funny in a meta 'Tubman's guerilla fighters' kind of way but it does make fighting her a bit of a nightmare with CS around!

Hi! Glad you're enjoying it

For José: it's based on the white-and-gold of the chevron at the hoist of the Philippines flag - this is where the main iconography of the flag is situated, and where its colour scheme differs most from the many other red-white-blue colour scheme flags out there. I make the gold very dark, however, just so that it's readable. Otherwise cities and icons can become unreadable, as the gold doesn't have enough contrast with the white. The gold for José really shines on the flags in diplomacy screens though!

As for Tubman - I agree, and it was a big risk as a colour scheme. I toyed with adjustments to the shade of off-white a lot trying to get one which is still distinct enough from city states. I found it quite easy to tell apart at this shade, but I can try making it a bit darker in the next update!

Ohh I see the vision with José now -- loving all the new flag pics, very elegant!

Re: Tubman - In that case, it might just be an issue of the lowest graphics settings compressing the unit icons and making it harder to tell at a glance. The borders themselves are fine, it's just individual unit icons that are a little too similar. It's a shame because it's a wonderfully fitting colour scheme for her!

Would changing her jersey priority be as simple as changing their order in playercolors.sql? If it looks alright on your end, I'd rather just wait for a mod that recolours CS than have you change yours!!

I could update her jersey to what you see below - which should be easier to discern and still have a similar vibe.

You can make this change in your own files: in the colors.sql file, under --Matt's Colours, insert:

SQL:
('COLOR_MATTSCOLOURS_CREAM', '230,218,172,255', '230,218,172,255'),

Where it previously said

SQL:
('COLOR_MATTSCOLOURS_CREAM', '255,245,205,255', '255,245,205,255'),

Otherwise, if you'd rather just swap the order of jerseys, you can also do that in playercolors.sql.

If another person also struggles with the current Tubman colour, I'll certainly make this the new jersey in the next update.

Is it possible to choose jersey color? I get why Ibn Batutta is green-on-green but I would waaay rather prefer any of the other variations :)

Unfortunately not yet, unless you want to make an edit to your own version of the mod - but Ibn Battuta's a bit of a placeholder (still using basegame colours as the main jersey).

Do you have an idea for what could replace it? I had a couple which I included as his alternates, but ultimately wasn't confident enough in them to push them to #1.

Thanks @mattwho! I gotta say, you’ve made such tasteful choices with the leaders. Just finished a Xerxes Achameneid game and his colors are beautiful!

Ibn could maybe have that royal blue on his robes with the more pale gold filigree on his chest.

Green on green is very ”Islamic” otherwise so I get why they chose it.

Really glad you like the colours!

Blue and pale gold I worry would be identical to Lafayette - and would scream France to most!

Though the blue of his outfit does verge on grey. I'll experiment with a grey+cream scheme for him, possibly with a custom bluish-grey if it can look distinct enough.

Thanks for the feedback!

@vhicta the latest update adds a new blue-grey and cream jersey for Ibn Battuta.

Main concern is that it might be too similar to Lafayette. Worth trying it out though!
