I keep getting outbid by Saladin in the Apostolic Palace. My Life Expectancy is 55 while his is 85!

How do I increase it?

FoolFromHell,
Approval Rate and Life Expectancy- The approval rate and life expectance show you the potential nations have for future population growth in their cites, as high numbers in both these categories means that there is plenty of room to added pop points to cities without having unhappy or unhealthy people. This is especially true in the early part of the game. Numbers around 50% mean they have reached the limit, while numbers below 50% show that they have overstretched their resources and could be vulnerable. Also if you look at the at the food yield along with the happiness and healthiness of a nation and find all three are high, especially in the later part of the game then it’s a good bet they are focusing on having specialists in their cities.
... from The inner workings of the Demo screen explained (available through The War Academy).

You're after larger populations in cities that have the Apostolic Palace's religion present, so spread the religion with Missionaries to cities that don't have it, and otherwise increase city numbers. One strategy to quickly increase city numbers is to run Hereditary Rule and build happiness through having a lot of units in your cities - health is usually less constraining; beyond Granaries, Harbors, and Aqueducts you should look for resource trades.

Others may have more to say on this ...

Thanks!

I still have a problem with my civilization being the second-last in health!

What do I do about THAT?

edit: ah. that link. Guess I have to get my health up... damn!

FoolFromHell,

I'm inclined to refer you to 'Chapter 3.' of Cabert's 'Ways into Health' item (also available through The War Academy).

Just to summarise mid-game pointers;

Presuming that you've built your health improvements, Calendar for Plantations (Bananas, Spice, Sugar) should be acquired if you've yet to do so (and Monarchy for Wineries if you have the Wine resource).

I tend to back-trade fairly late to pick up Guilds for the Grocer improvement, but if you're really struggling you may need to direct your research / trading efforts there.

Thanks!

I am going to make a game where, after I have won, I want to get over 150 Life Expectancy. Wouldnt be TOO hard as I will keep Future-Teching and my food will max out at some point.

(I dont play this game too much)

I think you can't have a Life Expectancy higher than 100. You also shouldn't care much about it, because it is quite irrelevant. A huge surplus health isn't really good for anything.

Actually, having high a life expectancy and approval rate means you're doing something wrong, i.e. not realising growth potential.

The Demographics screen is quite unintuitive on the whole.

Yes, I frequently find I have the worst life expectency despite having few unhealthy citizens. I presume its because I don't build aqueducts etc until the city needs them. I do better on approval rating (but rarely best) since an unhappy citizen is useless so I try and build happiness buildings a little before they are needed.
