How do I counteract:

STARVATION!

STRIKE!

Units being disbanded?

Starvation usually means that you are not working enough food tiles. Go into the full city view and try to work tiles that have a lot of bread on them. Build farms too.

You need enough money to pay for your military. Too big of a military can crush a small empire, with moeny and debt. Strike ultmately leads to disbanding, which deletes units to lower costs. You can work tiles with lots of money on them for more moeny. Build cottages too.

pay them!

Seriously, to avoid running out of money, before you build any more units, city or capture new city, set all your sliders down to 0% to see how much money you can possibly make. If your maximum income is less than 30%, it's not a good time to expand.

If your people are sick as well as starving, it might be enough to combat the sickness (building aqueducts/hospitals, connecting health supplies, disbanding sickness creating buildings etc.) as for every point of difference between the number of sick people and the number of healthy people you have to provide one more food.

You can also prevent your people from getting sick or starving by ordering them to stop making babies. Yes, there is a button (city governor setting) that prevent your city from growing any further. If you turn it on, don't forget to turn it off at the later time.

Many points on helping starvation can be found above; like buildings such as aqueducts and granaries, fresh water and trees will also improve health (so do not cut every tree in your path if you have health problems ;)). Connecting certain resources like wheat and fish to your cities will also increase your health and food supply, so try getting those early. If your city is big and starving early game, you might as well use that excess population for slavery, they can not grow bigger than that size right now anyway.

I usually face the strikes problem only if I expand too quickly early game. Try building early cities close to the capital and if they are farther away, build some courthouses to cut the costs.
