Medieval II: Total War

I just bought this game{using my usual early present- $100}, and one thing keeps bugging me- is it possible to play as the Byzantines? I haven't finished a single grand Campaign yet(Playing as Venitians}, so can someone tell me how to unlock them?

Yes, you have to alter a file though or beat them in the campaign.

open the descr_strat.txt in the default C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign

It should be right in front you and the process is easily completed. Careful where you put some of them though as they don't work straight out of the box. But there are mods that will make these work.
