1. What is a draft animal that hauls merchant carts?
2. Is it actually represents Ancient - Classical merchantmen?
3. Or Medieval and Renaissance as well?
4. In case of Medieval, Renaissance and Industrial Era. What should be wagon designs that represents these era. Conestoga? or just anything with pivoting front truck?

Initially merchants would have been bringing flint, copper, tin, furs, even feathers. Small quantities hand carried. Then as populations settled more, some merchants worked in bulkier goods so needed some way to get it there, cart and oxen I imagine. That did not really change huge amounts for a long time but now it is trucks, trains and ships, but even now you have the merchant with a case full of gold necklaces or a pouch of diamonds.

Not sure what you are really asking here. A walking person would not clearly identify as a merchant but a cart and ox does, sure different races and eras change that as the Firaxis artists and historians feel fit. I don’t have enough knowledge beyond that

The earliest traders probably would have led pack animals on foot, before there were wheeled carts. There's only so much a person can carry himself, so I'm not sure if we could really call anything before pack animals as true traders in game terms.

Lonecat seems to want accurate graphical representations for every single real-world stage of development for every unit type, but a) adding too many unit subdivisions for the game speed would actually make gameplay worse rather than better, and b) it's a waste of expensive art assets, especially in the case of traders, which aren't even player-controlled units.

^ If I say that
- Ancient & Classical:

- Medieval - Industrial: Conestoga or any wagons with front trucks
- Modern

- Atomics and Info Era: Freight Truck already available in game
Do you still considered it too much art assets?

mm in Civ 5 Ancients and Medieval embarkment ships are represented with different models. In antiquity those ships are a type of galleys, When player advanced to Middle ages. embarked unit boards cogs instead.
Actually i'd like to see (or even make) Conestoga for Medieval - Industrial merchnats.
