Meth01: Culture, with no Wonders

Alrighty, then, I'm up. Although, it seems like I just gone done playing ... like, yesterday? Wow, this is quick.

Uhhh...if we're winning in 32, why are we worried about a GA in 39? :crazyeye:

The 5th GA should actually shave a turn (use in Damascus), and the 6th (in 16--use in Medina) should shave another one.
So, does this mean the game is over in 30 turns?

Either way, it looks like this is my last turn in Meth01.

Quiet! :gripe: Unnatural things may occur if you jinx us!

 I was trying to rush my write-up so I could take a nap. Oh well, at least everyone got a good laugh. Man that nap wasn't long enough.

I was thinking the same thing. Seemed like that last turn went by fast.

Situation Assessment: 30 more turns! What else is there to assess? I guess I can check out the diplomatic state. Everyone is pleased with us, except for Tokugawa. He is now cautious; that is certainly an improvement. Oh, and, Methos' workers are still eating their lunch ...

Turn 0 - 1970AD: Nothing to do but press Enter.

IBT: The Germans and Japanese parade by with their Destroyers. Meanwhile, the Chinese show off their shiny new Carrier. Our Caravel is duly impressed ...

Germany and Japan each complete a SS Casing, while America completes a SS Thruster.

Turn 2 - 1972AD: Tokugawa completes 2 more SS Casings.

Turn 4 - 1974AD: Tokugawa completes an SS Thruster, while Qin enters the space race with completion of the Apollo program.

Turn 7 - 1977AD: Tokugawa completes another SS Thruster and his final SS Casing. He has now taken the lead in the space race.

Turn 8 - 1978AD: Our expenses just ticked up by 3gpt, due to inflation. We now have 128 gold and are drawing -4gpt. At this rate, that is 32 turns -- we are OK for the moment. If it gets any worse, we may need to start disbanding workers/troops.

IBT: Bizmark offers to trade us a summer blockbuster movie for some copper. I inform him that our people prefer opera and ballet.

Turn 9 - 1979AD: Tokugawa completes his final SS Thrusters. He has definitely taken a commanding lead in the space race.

Our culture picture after 10 turns:
Meth01_1980AD_Culture.JPG

Notice that the cpt in Medina has fallen. It is because of a loss of foreign trade route income. As Qin crushes the American cities, our cities are switching to less profitable trade routes. If I've done the math correctly, this has added a turn to our victory date.

Roster:
Methos
Conroe- Just Played
MeteorPunch- Up
ChrTh- On Deck

Looks like ChrTh was correct, and he'll be the one to finish her off.

This has me curious. Could we have accepted the deal and than traded it to someone else for gpt? I've never tried trading something away that I traded for. It could have helped our income and relations, if it is possible.

At the mercy of Qin...

1980 Bismarck completes the UN.
1981
1982
1983 Abstain from UN leader vote.
1984 Landslide victory for Qin.
mpmeth1x4qn.jpg

1985
1986 Get a Great Artist in Damascus...move both to Mecca so they could be used for any city if needed.
1987 Open Markets is proposed. I figure it would help our income=culture.
1988 Washington cancels a trade deal with us. Open Markets passes.
1989
1990

- skin of our teeth indeed. if anyone knows a way to get Tokugawa to hate on Qin quick, post it now. :D
- Wondering about the Artist situation in Mecca: Increase Artist production and hope it beats Prophet or lower it in favor of another city making Artists? I might not matter either way (haven't done the math).
- We have 6 Great Artists

Turn 0 -- 1990 AD

This is going to be close ...

We have 6 GAs. Medina and Baghdad are both over 39,000. We need to get one to 42,000 before we can use the GAs.

Turn 1 -- 1991 AD

Unsurprisingly, we're #1 Civ in terms of Culture.

Free Speech comes up for vote. We already have it, so no biggie.

Turn 2 -- 1992 AD

Toku demands we cancel open borders with GW. I do so.

Free Speech passes.

I hope this doesn't foreshadow something nasty:
METH01E.jpg

Turn 3 -- 1993 AD

:coffee:

Turn 4 -- 1994 AD

Phew, looks like China left our borders. Some spaceship parts complete.

Turn 5 -- 1995 AD

Vote comes up for Emancipation. I hope it doesn't pass ...

Turn 6 -- 1996 AD

Emancipation succeeds. It hurts our culture a little bit. I don't think it'll be fatal.

Turn 7 -- 1997 AD

Qin wants us to declare war on the US. I decline, and pray it doesn't come back to haunt us.

Turn 8 -- 1998 AD

:coffee: nervously ...

Turn 9 -- 1999 AD

Sec-General vote comes up. I abstain.

I do this VERY CAREFULLY.

Two Great Artists complete a Great Work in Baghdad. Legendary Culture.
Three Great Artists complete a Great Work in Medina. Legendary Culture.
One Great Artist completes a Great Work in Damascus. Legendary Culture.

I save the game:

Methos, would you like to do the honor of pressing ENTER?

Thanks, and I’d love too.

After reading ChrTh’s log I’m a little nervous. :twitch:

Before I press ‘Enter’ I decide to check our culture.

Meth01_Culture1.JPG

Looking good there, though when I first hit F1 I saw Mecca’s culture (which was like 41k) and was afraid we didn’t have enough.

Pressing ‘Enter’ first pops up this:

Meth01_UN_Sec_Gen.JPG

… and at the bottom of that screen was the notice that we won a culture victory!!! :woohoo:

Somehow I lost that screenshot. Oh well, we still won! :bounce:

In case you’re interested, here’s a couple more screenshots for you…

Great game everyone! I’m actually surprised we pulled it off!?! IMO we should have been able to win this one a lot earlier. I believe starting off alone on our own continent, plus it being mostly brown, didn’t help things much. I’m not for sure if going for as many religions as possible early was such a great idea. The barbarians were also a major problem.

You all have anything else you feel we could have done differently to have improved this game?

For those of you who want this game in your personal HoF, here’s the CivIV Replay file. If you don’t know what this is for place it in your Sid Meir’s/Replays directory and it will appear in your CivIV HoF list.

I’ve also uploaded the 2000 AD post-victory save.

Again, great game everyone!

  Yes, We Won!!!

I must admit, I was a bit nervous when I saw that UN vote in MP's log. But, we did it! Good job, everyone! :goodjob: Thanks for uploading the replay file, Methos!

Like you, I am surprised, as well. We did wait until the absolute last possible moment to decide on our 3 cities and start building culture. And, as you say, having no early trading partners didn't help things much. I don't attribute our slow start to the religions, though. We allowed ourselves to be thrown off of our game plan when the barbarian hordes started coming after us. In hindsight, we should have realized that the barbarians would be worse than usual when we are alone on a large continent. We should have put the fog busters out earlier. Plus, if we had expanded earlier, we wouldn't have had as much fog. But, we got our focus back and we overcame. And, in the end, a win is a win. Besides, in a way, the extra challenge made it a bit more fun.

Great game, everyone! :goodjob:
