Well, maybe I should make that cloaked dude as a dwarf too then? (with a bit shoulders & chest added of course)

So, you liked the kettle helmet? Ok, how's this (for comparison, the same guy without the helmet).
 
They look good, but the long arms and big feet make them look more like monkeys than hobbits. As far as I remember from the movie, in which they were very well characterized, they were more like normal humans but smaller and with bigger feet, but not too big.

The arms are not too long - they are infact a bit short compared to normal humans.
The feet are big (yes), but when you scale that unit down to hobbit-size, the feet need to be overly big to show (that they are bigger than of normal human). That's why they are so big in these previews.
 
Well, I think the proportions are perfect. They look great in my mod so far. At civ scale as aaglo stated, they are good.
 
I like the camail (mail hood, if memory serves) no less than the kettle helmet. I wasn't actually requesting a kettle helmet, only pointing out how the existing hats looked kinda like them, which was a redeeming quality. In fact, kettle helmets seem to be a bit more high middle ages than Nordic heroic ("dark") ages, so camail might actually be preferable from that point of view. But I'm not complaining. I'm actually ecstatic that aaglo eschewed plate armour, on his own accord no less!

Edit: Great idea with the gaffe, too. Attaboy, aaglo!

More edits: I've got me a nice wee Knights Hospitaller plastic toy glued to my monitor here, and he's wearing camail wi' no helmet, so uh, maybe camail is equally high middle ages as kettle helmets are? Ach! Still, how many units have we seen that have the guy wearing a mail hood instead of a helmet? Hmmm? Not many! Why don't we go for the camail then, just for the sake of newness, heh?
 
The chainmail hat looks a little too advanced for a hobbit. Leather might work better.
edit: I can't decide if the helmet without the mail underneath would look more or less "high middle ages" than the mail hood. It goes better with the rest of the armor than a leather helmet would, but something about the current setup just looks too much like a professional soldier.

I disagree about pony riding is unusual for hobbits. We know that Bilbo make his journey on pony back. Frodo & Co starts them adventures mounted too.
I don't remember that JRRT mentioned about flack men or hobbits armed with pikes, pole-axes etc. But world of the Middle-Earth much bigger than professor described in his books, isn't it? We can imagine many things which where not appeared in LOTR and other books but can present in the professor's world.
So I think that mounted hobbit isn't incredibility. Moreover we need some fast units for hobbits too. Pony rider is very nice and useful unit at last.
So it seems to me that it's a good idea to add a couple mounted units to hobbits line. :)
 
@aaglo: I don't think that the arms are too long, but too wide. Can you maybe de-muscle the spearmen a bit? He just looks awfully strong for a hobbit.

I think that a different head, big boots and (for example) civ coloured cloak would make an awesome dwarf. And hopefully not too hard for you to make. :)

I like the new gaffer, but then I liked the old one too. :) But I prefer the one with the helmet.
 
If it helps, I believe mail hoods were indeed a relatively late development, appearing in something like the tenth or eleventh centuries. Dark Ages warriors didn't generally bother to protect their necks/cheeks etc.

And I think the Hobbit with the cloak and hood is absolutely excellent! The best one so far.
 
Hmm. Hmm-hmmm.

I guess if both the kettle helmet and mail hood are equally high middle ages, then, uh, I think I'll champion the mail hood simply because not many units have that kind of headgear. (Although I seem to remember Bayeux tapestry Normans wearing mail hoods under their conical helmets with nasals. 1066 is about the max extent of our historical analogue, so I guess the mail hood might fit a little better?)

I also guess this means that this particular mail-clad hobbit is about the max in terms of armour for our hobbits, so any further hobbits (how many more are there going to be? I've lost count!) shouldn't be as armoured as him???

Oh, and I (likely) won't be checking in until after Easter, so y'all have a nice ol' time without me, k?

Edit: oops, I guess was too late with my comments on the gaffer! :blush: No problems, they turned out sweet-cans. :D

That's correct. Norman knights in William's day had mail hoods.
